I think a lot of would agree that we aren't quite getting the play we want, or at least hoped for, from our LBs, Carter in particular. I wonder if the transition to the new system has been slowed a little bit by the fact that the LB coaches aren't super familiar with it.

I don't know a ton about Matt Eberflus' past, but I know he was a Ryan guy with Cleveland in 09-10. Same for the quality control/LB guy Ben Bloom. I wonder if the fact that they is more of an attacking 3-4 guys than a cover 2 4-3 coaches has had any impact on our LBs. I don't want to say that they aren't doing a good job or something, but I would think its possible that they are overlooking certain details and that sort of thing. Maybe a LB coach with more 43 experience would help a bit?

Thoughts?

I think they will come around eventually.

Lee is the only one who looks good on a regular basis. I don't think Carter gets it yet but he could improve. I remember when the Cowboys drafted Ken Norton to play the Will spot and were sadly disappointed with him his first couple of years. When they moved him to the Mike spot he really blossomed.

I'm not saying that Carter might be a better fit at the Mike spot but he may take a little longer to become a solid Will. As for the Sam, they can do better than Durant or Sims -- give the rookie a shot.

Even though Eberflus’ only NFL experience is in the 3-4, he was largely a 4-3 defensive coordinator at Missouri where he developed ties with one of Kiffin’s disciples, Lovie Smith, and Tony Dungy.

“I met Lovie Smith in the early 2000s when he was in St. Louis and he came over to show us some of the system, and the next year we switched our defense to a 4-3,” Eberflus said. “In seven of the eight years we ran Lovie’s defense and we went up to the Colts and Tony Dungy. Every spring we’d go up to see Lovie in Chicago and put that system in, and they’re still running it at Missouri today.”

I also have wondered about Eberflus, simply because of the statistics reflecting passer ratings against the LBers that is awful. I think the situation is improving though (with Carter and Lee) so am reserving any harsh judgment until further games are played.

Like Eberflus but still would have preferred Ken Norton. He's down great work with LBs at USC and Seattle. He knows the 4-3 inside and out, his players love playing for him and even more so, Kenny is a former Cowboy.

There are a ton of former Cowboys who have found success in coaching ranks and its shocks me to no end that Jerry has not reached out to any of them. Norton, Thurman, Horton, Waters, etc.

Former bucs have said that it took them half a season to transition to the defense.

The corners really have not helped the linebackers covering in flat. Carter looks like he is thinking on the field more than reacting. He will come around and start playing faster.

I believe this; most schemes don't come to full fruition in the fist year nevertheless 6 games in, expect them to get better as the season goes on.
