A Touch of Hostility: Draft Review

When the draft started on Thursday I was aware of a few things. One, that Anthony Barr was the Dallas Cowboys main target. He went 9th to the Minnesota Vikings. Two, that Aaron Donald was our next target. He went to the St. Louis Rams at 13 after they turned down an offer from us to move up and take him. Ryan Shazier was our 3rd target. The Pittsburgh Steelers took him the pick before we did.

I knew despite the media frenzy that at 16 we were not going to take Johnny Manziel. I assumed at that point that we would make a deal with the Cleveland Browns and trade down. Our target then would have been Jimmie Ward. But with Manziel in a free fall the Browns knew they could get him lower and save themselves a little and they didn’t opt for the trade. Dallas then did the best they could have at that point. They took the guy rated highest and need on their board, Zach Martin.

Martin can play all five spots on the Offensive Line. He is the 8th player the Cowboys have drafted from Notre Dame. The last was OT Sam Young in 2010. The questions have been will he play RT, RG, or LG. The answer for now is he will be our RG. Bernadeau is back to being our top backup at Guard and Center. Am I saying Martin has already won the job? No, but I am saying he will. This kid is a fantastic football player. He is a two time Captain at Notre Dame. He started 52 consecutive games for them. He is a guy noted for being the first to practice, the last to leave. In short, he was a fantastic choice.

Odd..said that Dustin Vaughn has a Quick release. I heard someone on the fan during the last day of the draft talking about him and said he had a slow release.

Have no clue which is corrects as I have never seen the guy play and have only heard the name a couple of times.

If they had drafted Shazier, what would the plan be for Carter? Would Shazier work into the position and eventually replace him or would they move Carter to Sam? Sam would be a square peg for Carter IMO.

Thanks!

BTW, Texas Tech and Ramblin' Wreck do not go together. That would be Ga Tech.

Jerry indicated post-draft that they wanted pressure, either off the rush end, or by blitzing from the WIL. Shazier was the rush-from-the-WIL option. When he and Barr were gone, we had to switch gears and get Lawrence. I'm assuming Carter would have been moved and/or would get his snaps in packages.

They had barr ahead of donald?

Yes.

They have a three tech DT on the team right now (Melton). They did not have that RDE on the roster after Ware left.

They viewed Barr as that RDE and had him rated higher.

That is why they paid so much to move up and get Lawrence.
