Man it seems like that wreck was just yesterday. I wasn't a big Earnhardt fan but became one when I met Don Hawk who was his manager of personal affairs at the time. The man donated a LOT of money to a ministry I was working with and then told me some things about Dale.

No one ever knew just how generous he was with his money because most of what he did was done in secret.

I was a big fan. When I saw the crash during the race I did not think anything of it, I had seen wrecks like that many times before with no issue. As soon as the race was over I went out to get something to eat when I got back home a friend of mine who had just watched the race with me told me Dale died in that crash, I thought he was joking around but sure enough when I turned the TV on it was true.

Not often do I that things hard but that night was hard to take. I really miss the #3 on Sundays

HEre's the weird thing about that wreck. I was like you, I saw it as it happened and thought it was no big deal. But there was one person who knew it was much worse than anyone else. If you can find a tape of the call from TV listen to Darrell Waltrip. His emotions say everything. His kid brother just won the biggest race of his life and he is excited but his concern for Earnhardt tells you how hard the hit was.

Then looking at Schrader when he got to the car, then I knew it was bad. His reaction was not normal.

And while I wasn't a big fan of his driving, I miss him him as well on the track.

Funny you mention it I do have the tape of that race I have never replayed it.

As far as Dale racing style I admit he gave no quarter and asked for none in return as Dale always said win or lose "That's racing" I loved it

Now days of course I pull for Jr but the driver who reminds me the most of Dale is Tony Stewart

Good Comparison. Check out the end of the race and let me know what you think about the call. Knowing what we know now, it's pretty chilling.

Will do.

So tell me who do you pull for in NASCAR and who do you think will win the Daytona 500 this sunday

I'm such an old school guy so I have several favorites. I like Michael Waltrip but I know he is only going to be good on restrictor plates. I like Gordon and I more often or not root for Mark Martin. I interviewed him some time ago for a motor racing newspaper I worked for early in his career. Great guy.

As far as the 500 goes...I have to go with someone like Jimmy Johnson. What he has done the last four years is simply amazing and there is no reason to think anything will stop him at this point.

So with that said, because the 500 is always a crap shoot with the attrition that will be caused by "The Big One" and the minors that take out the occasional top runner who knows.
