It's been 18 long months of slow burn. Last we felt football good, it was almost halftime up north, and the Cowboys were looking confident and destined, and about to go up 17 against mighty Rodgers and the cheese dips.
Then a gut-punching fumble, a missed kick, a stolen catch, and a defensive wilt later, we were left to stew for seven bitter months, or so we thought. The promise made the bitterness bearable. Dez re-signed, the draft fell our way, and it was time to right wrongs.
A year and a half later....
You can sense it in the offseason meanderings of jazz, stash, toruk, Idgit, big dog, sydla....everybody. We're all stuck on this island, and we're sick of each other's breath. No offense, but you stink.
That ***** catch. It still lingers unanswered. It teased and poked and prodded us all. Damn it, he caught it. Plain as day. That team was really good. Flawed, but really good. How good? We thought 2015 would tell us, but it never got the chance.
Remember the anticipation and momentum last summer? It seemed full circle, but a couple of tough division wins later....snap! A clavicle and a foot. The most important clavicle and foot on the team, in fact. Gone went the promise and the energy, and we were left to suffer through a tortuous stretch of ineptitude against a stellar run of quarterbacks. We hoped against hope that Romo could duct tape himself and the season back together. The fiasco looked like a Turkish coup.
Who were we kidding?
Couple that with the unanswered guilty stench of Murray leaving. He deserved better, but we needed more for that kind of mullah. We've pained and argued over the running backs ever since. Joseph Randle happened. Dunbar flashed and burned. McFadden resurrected and emerged, sorta kinda. Morris arrived full turncoat, so just maybe the problem was solved? Nah, Elliott was drafted to squelch any remaining RB concerns.
So here we are. A roster that looks eerily similar to the one that slammed its helmets to the ground in disgust after that controversial loss in Green Bay.
I can't remember a July that was so equally filled with hope and doubt, promise and question, big and low expectations simultaneously. Strong, supported cases can be made for all scenarios from 12-4 to 4-12. It's hard to argue against any prognosis, although we most certainly will. I will.
May the football gods spare us the injuries so we can find out once and for all. It's been a long winter of discontent.
