A Walt Garrison story

This is my first post on the Dallas Cowboys Forum. Couldn't think of a better way to introduce it but relate a great Cowboys story I experienced first hand. Mel Renfro told this story during an FCA event in Ft. Worth honoring Bob Lilly back around 1990.

Apparently Walt liked to whittle in the locker room. Mel said he didn't make anything in particular, just wood shavings to be swept up. I think he said it was after the Cleveland game when Cleveland beat the Cowboys there 42-10 (1969). He said Walt sat there at his locker whittlin' away when he cleared his throat. Normally Walt never said a lot but when he did it was usually a beaut.

"Well," he said, not looking up. "I guess when you've hit the bottom of the barrel ain't no way to go but back up......unless it's further down."

Gotta love a guy who always created a level playing field.....

Walt was one of my favorite players back in the day. Always played hard and was ready with a great quote afterwards. :starspin

After Roger Walt is probably my favorite Cowboy of all time. Its a quad between them and The Coach and Lilly.

:welcome:

Walt loves to whittle. If you've ever seen the opening scene of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," those are Walt's hands doing that whittling.

Thanks for the story.

Walt Garrison- My Favorite Story.

He tells Coach Landry, "When you need 3 yards, I'll get you 3 yards. When you need 9 yards, I'll get you 3 yards."

Classic!

Welcome RedfinJim

Great way to say hi.

If you haven't already you HAVE to get Walt's book, "Once A Cowboy". It might be the all time great Cowboy book for stories and such. It's a must read and must have for all Cowboy fans.

I agree a terrific read, and I'm lucky enough to have met Walt and have him sign my copy. He gave me an odd look when I asked him though. :D

Walt Garrison one of the toughest Cowboys ever. Nobody ran harder, thats for sure.

How did you know that? Was it in the credits?
It's been so long since I saw it I don't remember a whittling scene, but it is good to know.

Welcome to Contentious, Texas, home of Cowboy fans from everywhere.
Best news and views to be had from mostly friendly folks and a few old soreheads.:)

Actually, that was Don Meredith who said that about "Puddin'" Garrison.

But it's still funny either way.

Oh my bad...I always thought it was Garrison that said it. I will correct it from here on out.

The whole "Puddin" name is another story in itself!! :laugh2:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I heard someone tell a story about Walt being asked if he had ever seen Tom Landry smile and Walt replied:

"No, but I've only been here 9 years"
