Once Jerry retires, either going to the house, or the dirt retirement plan, do you think Stephen would consider hiring McClay as the GM?

Do you believe they may have a gentleman's agreement in place now, or at least a promise?

I have been one of the toughest on this board in regard to Jerry over the years. So either he grew some common sense, or McClay is orchestrating these last few drafts over 4 years.

Some of it is luck as to how the draft falls. But there is a distinct design behind these selections which indicates someone not only has on their thinking cap, but it works very well.

What is your answer to my questions. And what would your opinion be if McClay took over the reins?

Thanks for your considerations.

Every year I'm worried he leaves.... at this point he has almost all the responsibilities of a GM he just doesn't have the title. Idk what he's being paid but if I'm JJ or SJ I would be paying him big money to make him happy... like top 5 GM money, Dallas has done phenomenal job since he's taken a bigger role.

We haven't won a meaningful playoff game in 22 years. Some of you guys act like we've got the Patriots GM here.

If Dallas keeps drafting this well, they will be in the NFC championship game .... just a matter of time

My thought has always been that maybe there is an under the table handshake between McClay and Stephen that includes a GM position in the future.

I am guessing McClay makes GM money right now, title or no.
Everyone in the world knows now how good he is.
If he leaves Cowboys IMHO it is for a President title, not GM.

But this guy started as a coach of the Desperados. He's a Cowboys family member and honorary Jones at this point.

Drafting and FA acquisition has taken a significant upturn though with slow but steady improvement and solid direction and signs of an actual plan.
As far as playoff wins though, I said it last year and I'll say it again; my concern more than having playoff team was did we have playoff coaches. After that first half of GB game we know the answer was a solid NO, the team lost a winnable game lost because of it.

The Cowboys did lose a winnable playoff game last year and the way they came out after a bye was embarrassing But let's not kid ourselves..the defense has been the sore thumb all along, I'm not going to point the finger at coaching when a team goes 13-3 with a rookie QB leading the way.

To the point of the OP, someone whether with a GM title or not, decided, let's stop trying to get quick fixes, and build this thing of ours up from the ground floor. And then this year, it looks like that same someone has a plan in place, for this team to not just be 13-3 good.. but to be built to beat New England which is ultimately what this is all about. You throw out the players we had last year and New England puts up 2 scores on us in the SB. You get the Secondary up to snuff, and now we have a realistic shot.

That's the type of planning I don't want to see disappear to Detroit or somewhere else.. we need to make sure that person is very well paid.

You're completely right but the second half of that GB game when they came out and played defensively how they had all year, and offensively went back to what got them there showed the coaches lack of ability to step up when needed. As far as the rebuilding, they've been consistent the past few years in philosophy of team building which seems to be since McClay came on board. I don't know if they could have beat New England but I know they should have beat GB but were hamstrung in the first half by coaching; still love the direction they're going though.

Would not be shocked if there is an under the table agreement.
He has turned down GM offers and that is probably not something easy to do IMO

Is it possible that McClay loves it here and JJones is no fool. McClay is getting his money. Jones empathy and understanding of people is well known.
