Aaron Donald vs Leary, Fred and Martin

I was on the "please let Aaron Donald fall to us" bandwagon pre-draft and was really disappointed to see the Rams take him ahead of us. So I've been looking forward to seeing how he'd fare against the interior of the Cowboys' line. In particular I wanted to see how Leary would hold up against him - when Leary has struggled, it has often been against quick tackles out-quicking him.

So here's how it all broke down: I counted Donald in for 27 defensive snaps. He didn't start, but would come in on nickel sets, often as the nose tackle in 3 man nickel fronts, right on Frederick's helmet. Of his 27 snaps, 18 were passes and 9 were runs. Only 9 of his snaps were in the second half. It was obvious the Rams preferred to not have him in the game in base packages on a regular basis. They wanted him rushing the passer.

I was a little surprised at the breakdown of who he faced:
He lined up over Fred 15 times.
He lined up over Leary 5 times.
He lined up over Martin 6 times.

In the first half, he got completely neutralized. He just didn't come close to getting any kind of pressure against anyone, and he was no factor against the run. When Fred had solo responsibility for him, he handled him with ease...Donald mainly flailed away nowhere near Romo. He dipped a shoulder at one point and looked like he might get past Fred, then just like that Fred got his hands on him and had him under control. He drove upfield pretty hard once on Martin, who had no trouble pushing him past Romo. Leary had absolutely no trouble at all with him. With the amount of 3 man nickel fronts the Rams showed, Leary or Martin would give Fred help at times in pass protection. At one point Donald stunted around and tried to loop outside Smith, who handled him easily.

On a couple of consecutive sweeps left on the third series, Martin pulled left and Donald followed him through the hole. Free tried to block down on him but Donald was way too quick and Free ended up chasing him down the LOS, athough Donald couldn't catch up to Murray on either play. It was a tough assignment for Free with such a quick tackle.

Donald looked much more active in the second half and had a couple of plus plays in only 9 snaps. On the long TD drive that gave the Cowboys the lead, he tackled Murray for a five yard loss. He was Fred's responsibility on the play, but Free's man (Sims) really blew up the play. Fred had his hands on Donald as Murray was headed between Martin and Free, but Free's man just totally beat him inside at the snap, and Murray came to a dead stop and tried to drift back inside. Donald kept driving towards the play and finally slipped away from Fred and made the tackle for the loss. He showed some pretty good power and motor, although if Free had just gotten his hands on his guy, Donald was probably out of the play.

Later in the drive (on the Dez PI play), he finally showed the burst and power that he showed at Pitt. He blew by Fred right off the snap, then Martin tried to pick him up but he got inside and just bulled his way past Martin and hit Romo as he released the ball. It was pretty impressive, and it was really the only time the entire game that he showed something special.

He also held his ground and got in on a tackle on a run while up against Martin earlier in the half, on a two yard gain by Randle.

He gave Fred a little trouble just those two times, in a lot more snaps than either Leary or Martin faced him. Both guards handled him without much problem, and in particular Leary had an easy time of it. The three of them are really adept at helping each other out and handing off linemen to each other, they're a joy to watch in detail.

My appreciation as well. It is still hard to see these guys working as a unit as well as they are. Not sure **** is Callahan or Pollack or just the combination of them both, but the OL is so much better than it once was.

Good stuff OP. I thought I read he had like 1-TFL. He'll improve, but so will our OL.

I'm really looking forward to our OL matchups against the DLs of thr Saints (tons of exotic blitzes), Seattle (probably #1 defense) and Texans (probably #2).

The Rams were dead set on not having Murray make them look silly again. Despite them stacking the line of scrimmage, we still ran (29 times) more than we passed (23 times) and Murray got his 100+ yards for the 3rd consecutive game to start the season. Cowboys are like 7-1 when we run more than we pass in the JG era.

props to @hony for this....it was hard to see anything on specific matchups for me on my pc since I had to work and only had the picture up in the left hand corner....

makes me happy that the draft fell as it did (Donald gone, passing on Manziel)....

I liked Donald as well. I'm surprised that St. Louis is using him so much as a 1 technique. I wonder if he would have made a bigger impact for us with Marinelli coaching him. However, I'm very happy we have Zach Martin. I don't know if anyone would have made a bigger impact than him. Look at the way that our offense has changed. We are running the ball consistently.

Thanks for doing this. Seems like the line didn't have many problems with the entire, star-studded, Rams front - even if they were missing Long.

Great post, seems as though Leary is coming on from a slow start.

I wanted Leary as well going into the draft, and still think he'll be a decent player in the league. Martin was an awesome fall back.

That's what I thought. Good on Fred and co. for handling him, but if they're lining him up over center, I think he's being poorly misused.

Thanks everyone. By the way, there were a couple of plays that I forgot to mention in the OP, that were pretty entertaining. Both of them were short yardage situations in which it looked like the Rams had 6 or 7 d-linemen in the game. The first was Murray's TD in the second quarter. Donald was lined up over Leary. Leary got his hands on Donald immediately and stood him up, then pushed him backwards and Donald fell flat on his back and Leary fell on top of him. The play ended up with Murray in the endzone and with Donald nowhere to be seen, with Leary just laying on him. It took me a couple of viewings to even see that it was Donald underneath him. Leary is really a beast in the run game.

The other was the 3rd and 1 play in the second half that got stuffed and led to the Bailey field goal. The Rams had Donald lined up at right end, over Witten. Witten got a decent block on him. The play went the other way, it was the play where Romo ended up yelling at Parnell for missing his assignment and killing the play. But for one play anyway, Witten handled Donald.

I was a little surprised not to see more of the explosion and burst off the ball from Donald that he showed in college, and that he was reportedly showing all through Rams training camp. He's a rookie and it may very well come. I think this was the most snaps he's seen in a game yet and he started getting more active and more effective in the second half. So he'll learn and it'll be interesting to see how he develops through the year. But going up against the Three Blocks of Awesome in the middle of the Cowboys line, he had tough sledding.

Thanks WG. I had never seen those quotes. And they're right, Callahan is the forgotten man behind all of these.

Maybe he's actually now carved a little niche for himself even if he doesn't stay with us as an O-line and running game guru. If they continue this way all season long then it's hard not to think people around the league would value a guy like that as just short of an O-coordinator.

Let's remember too that he's the one who personally worked out Leary and knew what he had in him. It's funny I don't hear ppl making fun of Jerry for his treatment of UDFA Leary anymore. Then again, I don't hear him getting props either.

I think Leary also shut up the Bernadeau fans.
