Hmm, wasn't he a first rounder a few years back? Definitely worth a look imo. Don't like our backup options behind Kosier/Bigg at all.

* nm, he was early 2nd, 35th overall. Still remember him vaguely while monitoring the draft that year though.

he was the 3rd pick in the 2nd round for TB in 2007...seems like he has personal problems or did at least

As long as he's over his bout of depression, he'd be worth a look.

Sears missed all of last season for what tampa called "personal issues".

wikipedia entry says something about a neurological disorder stemming from a concussion he suffered.

He's got talent, not sure how healthy he is to play.

the report about his release also says that based on being in the league less than 4 years he is subject to the waiver wire. if he is capable of returning to the league i'd imagine a team ahead of the cowboys will put in a claim.

Did the bucs bring in Olinemen FA? I do not remember them drafting any this weekend.

Also have to wonder if he had injury issues or just stunk it up.

I really don't follow the bucs so I don't know the story on the guy.

Maybe Aikmaniac can shed some light on him as I think he lives down around that area.

He had personal issues with rumor being it was depression possibly linked to a concussion he had.

Bucs cut G Sears, DT Hovan, FB Askew among six players

TAMPA - Arron Sears is no longer a Tampa Bay Buccaneer.

The team announced Sears' release Monday along with five other players, including veteran defensive tackle Chris Hovan and fullback B. J. Askew.

Sears, a second-round draft pick in 2007, missed the entire 2009 season while dealing with what the team called a personal matter. After a six month absence, Sears rejoined the team in November and was working out at the facility.

Bucs officials declined to comment on Sears' condition or the decision to release him.

Sears started 31 games and one playoff game for the Bucs.

Bucs releasing Arron Sears, three others

The black Monday at One Buc Place continues, with the team also parting ways with four others, including embattled guard Arron Sears.

Also being released: offensive lineman Shawn Murphy, punter Sam Paulescu and cornerback Stoney Woodson.

Sears, by far, is the biggest name on the list. He missed all of 2009 after spending it on the non-football injury list because of undisclosed personal problems that left him uncommunicative at one point last summer. He returned to the team late in the season but was not activated.

As recently as last month, general manager Mark Dominik said with confidence the club thought Sears could be of assistance to the team in 2010 as he was working out and making an attempt at a comeback. But Sears is believed to have had a setback and now his football future is unclear, at best. It's possible he might not play again.

At the NFL owners meetings in March, Dominik said, "He wouldn't be with the organization if we didn't feel like he had the opportunity to come back and help this football team."

The following day, coach Raheem Morris said, "Arron's working and we'll have to see what Arron is when he comes back and we start our offseason. The situation was a private situation and we tried to keep it that way. . . I look forward and I'm hopeful to see where he is and to see how he's going to react when he has an opportunity."

Sears was a second-round pick in 2007 and was immediately installed as the starting left guard. He started all 31 games in which he played.

It's believed Sears' problems are of a psychological nature, but to this day, no one associated with the team has given any details about what Sears is facing. The Times explored the situation thoroughly and learned more details but much about it remains unknown.

The Bucs' first two picks from the 2007 draft have met unfortunate fates. In January, 2007 first-round pick Gaines Adams died suddenly from cardiac arrest just months after being traded to the Bears.

On a related note, receiver Michael Clayton -- who appears exposed after the team drafted two receivers last week -- will not be among today's moves.

Tampa Bay Bucs guard Arron Sears' absence leaves only questions, concerns

By Stephen F. Holder and Rick Stroud, Times Staff Writers
Friday, July 24, 2009

RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. — When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held offseason workouts in mid March, guard Arron Sears was there.

But he wasn't the person teammates and coaches remembered. He was distant, even for someone with his shy demeanor. Sears participated for several weeks, until shortly after the team's minicamp in April, when he simply stopped communicating. He was unresponsive when asked questions. At times, he resorted to replying in writing.

He hasn't practiced since.

The team hasn't explained his absence, and general manager Mark Dominik would say only it's a "private matter." Bucs players and staff know little about the situation.

A week shy of the training camp reporting date, the mystery remains about part of one of the Bucs' strongest units, the offensive line.

What's wrong with Arron Sears?

The answers are elusive.

This week a St. Petersburg Times reporter visited Russellville, a tiny Alabama town where Sears' family lives and where he recently has been residing.

Wednesday afternoon, Sears' mother, Henrietta Woods, answered the door and was pleasant but prudent, declining to comment.

Minutes later, when the reporter returned for a follow-up question, a black sedan that had been circling the neighborhood was in the driveway. Sears was behind the wheel. Usually one of the most polite players on the team, he declined to lower the window or even communicate with the reporter.

His mother repeated her no-comment stance, and the reporter left.

Many questions remain.

•••

Trying to glean information about Sears' near three-month absence has been difficult. Only a small circle of people are in the know about it, and they aren't talking.

But teammates and Bucs staff are concerned about Sears. The Bucs have worked with his representatives to arrange for unspecified expert help. But the cause of his problems remains unknown.

Last season Sears, 24, missed the Nov. 2 game at Kansas City because of a concussion. The effects of concussions on athletes is an increasing area of study. But Dr. Thom Mayer, who helped the NFL and its players union establish guidelines to identify, report and treat concussions, said it would be unusual for physiological symptoms resulting from a concussion to get worse over time.

"In many respects, there's a lot more we don't know (about concussions) than we do know,'' said Mayer, who has not examined Sears and spoke only in generalities.

No official diagnosis has been made, but at this point, playing football does not appear to be a realistic option for Sears in at least the short term.

The Bucs will soon be faced with a decision if Sears, entering his third season out of Tennessee, is unable to report for training camp. They must determine how to classify him and likely will consider placing him on the nonfootball injury list.

If he remained on the active roster, Sears would count against the 80-player training camp maximum.

Sears is in the third year of a four-year contract that is scheduled to pay a base salary of $460,000 this year. If he is unable to play during the season, whether he is paid would depend upon the cause of his problems. NFL contracts generally are not guaranteed.

The Bucs have been preparing all offseason to accommodate the loss of Sears. Second-year player Jeremy Zuttah, drafted in the third round in 2008, has taken ownership of left guard and has earned rave reviews from coaches.

But Sears' absence deals a serious blow to the depth on the line, with Zuttah no longer available for backup duty at guard or center. Veteran Sean Mahan becomes the top reserve at those positions.

And the search for answers about what's wrong with Arron Sears continues.

Sears appears to suffer from depression. If he can get that under control, he's a good player... but the Bucs clearly don't think he'll be able to continue.

We should sign him and Andrews.

That'll really bring up morale in the locker room.

Don't be an ***. Those guys are sick. Morale is hurt by people who intentionally do bad stuff. These guys need help.
