Who needs drafts?
The Boston Globe's Patriots beat writer Greg Bedard tweeted this afternoon means that the team's release of safety Brandon Meriweather means the Pats entire 2007 draft has been cleared out.

Minutes later, Bedard re-tweeted follower Harlan Geer's observation that of the 41 players the Patriots drafted from 2004 through 2008, only four, nose tackle Vince Wilfork, guard Logan Mankins, kicker Stephen Gostkowski and inside linebacker Jerod Mayo remain. (Geer missed '08 backup WR Matthew Slater, so there are five.)

Five players. That's it. Three quality starters and a kicker.

The quirky stat sent me to examine the Indianapolis Colts' drafts in that same five-year span. I found six hits, four starters (RB Joseph Addai, S Antoine Bethea, G Mike Pollack, WR Pierre Garcon) and two backups (WR Anthony Gonzalez and TE Jacob Tamme) in Indy's haul. Good players, but no big stars.

Dallas, by comparison, has twelve picks from that span still on the roster, with seven of them (Demarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Jay Ratliff, Anthony Spencer, Doug Free, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins) starting, while Orlando Scandrick, Jason Hatcher, Martellus Bennett, Tashard Choice and Alan Ball continue to play supporting roles .

Is this supposed to make us feel better? That somehow, if another team fails that it's OK for us to fail? Is that what we've reverted to? I don't know, but I expect better from a storied franchise that's Americas Team.

Great logic and my kids even use it when they don't do well on a test..."hey, there were a lot of other students that didn't do well either." Great, I feel better.

Here's some more facts...

Using the time frame 2004 to present, the Cowboys went 63-49/.562 win% and made three playoff appearances (1-3).

During that same time frame the Patriots went 87-25/.776 win%, with six playoff appearances and two Super Bowl wins (three Super Bowl appearances).

The Colts went 87-25/.776 win%, with seven playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win (two Super Bowl appearances).

Yeah, we're about the same....:facepalm:


But, hahahahaha, those stupid Colts and Pats, they don't know how to draft! Look at'em, we got a bunch of our players still playing, and all they got is a few Super Bowls.....wait?
 
People get a certain impression in their head and they can't see reality because of it. They have this impression that Dallas doesn't draft well and has to pick up overpriced FA's to compensate for it.

When Hos posted his projected 53 a few days ago, I re-posted it (in the same thread) http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=216895&page=2 pointing out which starters were "home grown" and which weren't. 19 of the starters on his list were drafted by Dallas (or picked up as undrafted FA's) and 19 of the non-starters were too.

I believe Gronkowski was the only one on his list that was cut, but that still leaves 18 starters that are home grown. That's not bad drafting any way you cut it.

Oh sure there are some players drafted by other teams that I would have preferred instead of some of the one's we drafted. But it's clear we've put together a team with some very good talent primarily through the draft.
 
Gee, I wonder if the "inept" Pats would trade their roster for ours. Nah.

Apparently even the greatest teams God ever created can bomb drafts.
Having the 1a and 1b two best quarterbacks over that span did both teams wonders wouldn't you say?

So are you positing that keeping more of your own draft picks means you're "better" at drafting?

The problem with that is you're including Bill Parcells into the mix when he's not around anymore. Now you can pretend Jerry drafted those players, but then why couldn't he find players from 1994-2002? I don't believe it and will never believe it.

My hope is in the idea that Garrett can do what Parcells did, not that our Owner/GM is some kind of talent evaluator.
 
Since we're comparing ourselves to other teams, I would love to know how the Packers - the NFL's current champion - have fared over the same time period in their drafts, but alas, I'm too lazy to look it up.

My guess is that they're blowing the same Pats, Colts and Boys out of the water in the draft, and they're primed for many years of success as long as Rodgers stays upright.

The funny (pathetic) thing about these comparisons, however, is that those teams have received championship hardware in the past decade and we have one playoff win.

That said, I believe things will eventually change under Garrett.
