Great minds think (somewhat) alike:

Stash's Dallas Cowboys 2009 Mock Draft

Round 2 : Duke Robinson - OG - Oklahoma - 6’5” 335 lbs.

Massive drive-blocking mauler who plays with a mean streak. Capable of pancaking opponents. Has long arms for a guard. Solid short-area quickness for a player his size. Durable player with size, strength, and drive to compete immediately at the next level. Robinson is capable of contributing quickly to improving the Cowboys’ running game.

Round 3: Rashad Johnson - FS – Alabama - 5’11” 195 lbs.

Smart, undersized player with excellent instincts and a nose for the ball. Great hands for the interception and makes the most of his opportunities. His three interceptions led the way for his team’s victory over LSU. Hard worker and team leader who can make the defensive calls.

Round 4: Tony Fiammetta – FB- Syracuse – 6’0” 246 lbs.

Solid, tough fullback who can block, catch, and run. Came into his own as a true fullback in 2008. Often used in motion so his versatility is also a plus. A team leader who will run through walls to help his team win. I feel he would be a considerable improvement over the average Deon Anderson and help the Cowboys’ 3-headed monster running game.

Round 4: Johnny Knox – WR – Abilene Christian – 5’11” 185 lbs.

Speed-burning deep threat with 2,227 yards and 30 touchdowns the past two seasons. Solid candidate for slot and kick return duties. Provides a nice contrast to the long-striders this team currently has at receiver. Will need some polish and time to adjust to the pro game, but the potential is certainly there. Recent 4.3 40 time has his stock on the rise.

Round 5: Jason Watkins - OT - Florida - 6’6” 317 lbs

Athletic left tackle prospect with quick feet to play at the NFL level. Effective in space and capable of getting to the second level. Versatile, has also played on the right side so he could begin his career as a swing tackle. Has long arms and excellent athleticism with considerable upside potential.

Round 5: Jason Phillips - ILB - TCU – 6’1” 236 lbs.

Smart football player, son of a football coach. Capable of calling defensive plays. Tough player who plays through pain. Good speed for his size and good awareness in coverage. Could start out as special teams contributor while he develops. Recent injury is the reason he’s still available in 5th round.

Round 5: Stephen McGee – QB – Texas A & M – 6’3” 223 lbs.
Solid physical specimen with the smarts and leadership skills to develop into a solid NFL quarterback. Team-oriented player open to coaching, should make for an ideal developmental quarterback behind Tony Romo and could develop into a future starter.

Round 6: Bradley Fletcher – CB – Iowa – 6’1” 195 lbs.

Terrific athletic ability and solid size for the position. Matches up well with bigger receivers. Solid special teams player who can contribute in that role while he develops his game as a cornerback.

Round 6: Jasper Brinkley – ILB – South Carolina – 6’2” 265 lbs.

Solid size and strength to play inside in a 3-4 system. Solid instincts and blitzer. Recent struggles and injury have dropped his stock, but he still has the potential to develop into a solid inside presence.

Round 7: Lee Robinson – OLB - Alcorn State - 6’2” 243 lbs.

Team leader and solid character. Very productive player coming off a solid senior season. A bit raw, but a natural athlete, Robinson could fill a rush linebacker role while his game develops.

Round 7: Antonio Dixon – DT – Miami – 6’3” 326 lbs.

Solid nose tackle candidate with the strength to stack linemen and stuff the inside running game. Able to handle the double-team. Above average agility for a player his size. While not a full-time starter, he won’t be asked to be in Dallas either, but could provide a breather for Ratliff at nose tackle

I am in awe of this mock, well done. I would like to see the Vollmer kid from Houston somewhere in the later rounds other than that I can look at this and understand all the picks and agree it is realistic. I have my fingers crossed that Brandon Tate falls to us but that is a unrealistic dream. Great Mock if McGee lands in our laps.

Thanks.

At this point, the only pick I think would be a real stretch is Brinkley.

It looks like he's got it together and is rising up draft boards.

I doubt he'll be available where I have him.

We get Robinson at #51 it's a steal. Knox seems to be pretty popular lately and in the 4th round is where he should go. Rashad Johnson's name cameup last year but he didn't declare for the draft and I truly believe we'd snag him if he's there in the 3rd round and we didn't draft a safety with our first pick. He's the 1 pick that I haven't heard mentioned in the zone and he's probably our most likely. Jerry's been watching him for 2 years now.

I'm not on the Robinson bandwagon...at all.

Vasquez and Reynolds are solid picks...no need for Robinson IMO.

Replace Robinson with R. Johnson and put Sidbury in the 3rd...infinitely better.

Looked Jason Williams up and he has great athleticism and coverage skills. Can get into the pocket but uses his speed too much when doing so and doesn't seem to have much technical savvy in that regard. He's night the brightest kid when I heard him during an interview and he is from a small school so you'll get that. Looks great in coverage though and I would label him a finesse LB, pretty much the type of guy we need in passing downs at ILB.

Good find and seems the 4th is where he'd be around and would be great value IMHO. If this is the same Jason Williams from Western Illinois that is. We need a good coverage ILB with serious speed and he'd fit the bill. For his size I can't see why we couldn't get him to be more physical.

Rashad Johnson will be the safety we pick if he's around. Very good coverage skills and makes plays but his tackling isn't solid enough due to his lack of physicality. That's going to be the problem with him and we would absolutely have to move him to FS. He needs to build up and hopefully that won't affect his speed that much. Great character on Rashad.

If we get him tere he's great value but I'm not worried about guard as much as the other either. If Clint Sintim is around at that pick I'll take him. He's been shooting up boards from going in the 3rd to almost the first. Lots of DE's that are considered tweeners in the first and that's why Sintim should be around.

If we get a shot at one of those first round OT's with the 51st I'd take it in a heartbeat but I'm not dying for Robinson and he'd be worth it. Raji will not fall out of the 1st round and if he did or close to it we should make a move there. Our 2nd rounder I'm pretty much BPA. The other picks are value and need.

I'm not interested in a WR until the later rounds and that Knox kid has grown on me, especially for a 4th or 5th. If we're going to take a WR with our 2nd I rather trade it for a young vet WR on the trading block like Braylon Edwards. We won't see squat out of any WR other than Crabtree or Maclin. Harvin, Nicks, Britt and Robiskie should be decent players down the road but nothing we wouldn't already have on our staff.

I looked at some Jason Williams videos and he look extremely thin to me..He actually looks like a safety haha..he's got really skinny legs and he just doesn't look like he could last at ILB..I'm looking for one that can contribute this year and eventually take over full time.

I agree with your analysis on his pass rush ability, he needs more work if he's going to play 3-4 OLB. But will be just fine as an ILB. I disagree with the finesse label though. Williams lead his team in forced fumbles every year finishing with 14 career FFs. That is not finesse. He is not the traditional thumper, but he has football smarts and always looks to make a play, whether the ball is in the air or in the runner's hands.

And the best thing about his speed, is that he PLAYS fast too. Very fluid, instinctive & aware in coverage too.

Does this look like a SS to anyone?

Could use some more work on his calves, but I don't see a guy who is noticeably small.
