Actor & Role II

This won't be popular.

He is a good actor but far from great. I put him in the Sam Jackson realm of actors.

But the Castaway movie, IMO is the worst that I saw with him.

Really? I like Samuel Jackson but you really can't even compare their bodies of work and say that they are equivalent. Jackson has a lot of great movies but his work is diluted with plenty of dud movies.

Best - Saving Private Ryan. Excellent movie all the way around.

Worst- Money Pit.

I really am curious as to who here throwing him under the bus for Castaway would put in his same role, where the supporting actor was a volleyball. I thought it was one of his best 4 roles.

I've known lots of people in life that simply cannot discern good and bad acting.

Best - A League of Their Own.

Worst - Money Pit

I also have a soft spot for Woody in Toy Story. :)

The 'Burbs - was to funny

Turner & Hooch - not bad

Charlie Wilson's War - enjoyed it

Saving Private Ryan - I think hes best work

The Da Vinci Code - enjoyed it

The Green Mile - great

Forrest Gump - to funny Bear Bryant "sayin who the hell is that"

The Ladykillers - funny

Toy Story - love Woody

Was his role in the Money Pit that bad or is it the fact that Shelly Long is the most irritating actress alive.

Excellent point.

Best: Castaway - He was on an island by himself and it was fascinating

Worst : Da Vinci Code

I agree on DaVinci Code. Hanks came across to me as uninterested in the movie as if he was sleepwalking through the role.

I find Hanks both capable of being funny and serious. Loved him in Dragnet even though as a whole I didn't like the movie. He was great in Big and excellent in Bachelor Party. Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia, The Green Mile and Apollo 13 provided him with several opportunities to be serious and he did very well.

Tom Hanks is one of those guys I've had a lot of discussion about with friends.

For me, he's ALWAYS Tom Hanks playing someone. Meaning that I see the ACTOR Tom Hanks on screen, not his character.

It's the same thing for me with Jon Hamm, every time I see him I think, oh it's Jon Hamm.

This is not to say that I don't think both of them are great actors, I just never think they transform into someone else. Not the way a guy like Daniel Day-Lewis or even Leonardo DiCaprio.

As far as Best/Worse:

Best: Cast Away - Props to commanding a screen all by himself, I was interested the entire time. When an actor can get you to feel something for a volleyball, that's a job well done.

Worst: Saving Private Ryan - I found just about every other character in that movie memorable, except for the one Hanks played.

Hanks was in Saving Private Ryan? :laugh2:

I'm surprised by how many people thought Castaway was badly acted. The one-man show is insanely hard to do well, and I thought he nailed it. Now the movie isn't necessarily the most fun to watch, but that's just because I wasn't that intrigued by the story line. I thought they put way too much emphasis on the romance angle, and not enough on his having to readjust to modern life.

Best: Philadelphia

Worst: The Da Vinci Code (Though I haven't seen some of the earlier films people cited like The Money Pit or the Bonfire of the Vanities.)
