I gotta see what people say about John Wayne.

Best...Marshall Rooster Cogburn in both movies.

Worst...Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror."

He's in that all of 30 seconds.

I could have mentioned his role in Blood Alley as his worst, but thankfully I can't remember his character's name and don't want to look it up. Want to hear the real tragedy of how bad that one was? His co-star was Lauren Bacall. Talk about missed opportunities. They were awesome together in The Shootist. A tragic shame a power couple like that had a such a groaner of a script.

I haven't watched enough of his movies to comment really.
You have no one to blame for that but the man who stares at you in the mirror when you shave and brush your teeth.

My biggest issue is I hate black and white movies. Actually, I'm generally not a fan of many movies or shows produced before 1975. (some exceptions of course)

I watched the original True Grit not long ago. It was a decent movie, but I wouldn't buy it on DVD. Odds are, I will never watch it again.

Thats not a slap in the face to the Duke, thats just how I feel about it. I probably won't watch the new True Grit ever again either. Neither of them compare to The Unforgiven or Tombstone IMO.

My personal preference is El Dorado. Close to it are the Quiet Man and Hellfighters. El Dorado and Big Jake are buoyed up by great supporting casts, imo.

The Genghis Khan one is probably the most offal.

However, I'm of the opinion that the True Grit/Rooster Cogburn movies are merely middle of the pack.

IMO.

This is a personal failing. I hope you know....;)

Ditto. The top sentimental favorites of mine are his roles in The Alamo, The Cowboys and The Searchers. So much of his stuff is classic The Duke stuff. I couldn't honestly say how often I've rewatched McLintock! and Big Jake (side note: Richard Boone gives one of the BEST dying scenes in Hollywood history that movie in my opinion).

There are so many black and white movies available from Hollywood's golden era which put recent movies to shame that it's pathetic. Just a quick question to help me sum up your dislike for these kinds of movies. Have you ever watched Casablanca, Lilies of the Field and/or It Happened One Night?

Nope. The problem isn't that I think old black and white movies are bad . That couldn't be further from the truth. My problem is I generally don't like watching things in black and white.

Fair enough.

People tell me all the time that broccoli tastes great and is highly nutritious. I take one look at them and say, "No can do, buddy"!

:)

Unpopular but honest opinion:

I've tried a few times to sit down and watch John Wayne so I can feel the magic that every else seems to experience. I watched The Searchers and True Grit and I just couldn't get into it. I enjoy westerns and love me some Clint Eastwood, but I suppose the Duke just isn't for me.

I also really dislike Elvis and loathe every time the wife wants to visit Graceland.

I will pray for you. :)

Hey. Different strokes for different folks I guess. ;)
