In his letter to Peterson, Commissioner Goodell wrote if the player adheres to all counseling, etc, earliest reinstatement is April 15
Peterson has 3 days to appeal and get an expedited hearing. If he does NFL says he remains on Exempt List w/pay pending decision
Goddell advised Peterson in the letter that any further violations of the Personal Conduct Policy could result in his banishment from NFL
NFL notes its domestic violence policy of 6 games for 1st offense w/escalating discipline if a minor involved. Considers a switch a weapon
Goodell's letter also states Peterson "showed no remorse" and outlines a require for intense counseling to qualify to play again

Goodell lists three reasons for harsh punishment in letter to AP “First, the injury was inflicted on a child who was only four years old."
Goodell to AP: "Second, the repetitive use of a switch in this instance is the functional equivalent of a weapon."
“Third, you have shown no meaningful remorse for your conduct, said that you felt ‘very confident with my actions because I know my intent.’

Big deal.

They just want to get him a clean slate.... Cause he deserves it (the kids said so....)

1. It's no secret that the NFL bases its suspension timelines off the amount of media coverage a case receives.
2. It can't be argued that even if you believe a child should receive some old-school discipline that the pics of Peterson's son goes far beyond what is reasonable.
3. Peterson's career in Minnesota is over.
4. Let the AP to Dallas threads officially commence.

This whole thing is a self-inflicted debacle for Goodell and the NFL.

For far too long, this multi-billion dollar business has made up their player conduct policy as they went along, with no rhyme, reason, or standards.

And that lack of foresight and action has now come full circle to sit squarely on the Commissioner's desk.

And this will be the mistake which ultimately dooms this Commissioner and leads to his being replaced.

Just when things were starting to quiet down from the last round of issues, the league inserts themselves squarely into this next one.

Self-inflicted and unnecessary. The league should have had some sort of plan in place months ago but chose to hide their heads in the sand.

They deserve what they get.

Agreed.

They have brought this upon themselves.

The NFLPA allowed Goodell's kingship in the CBA. They are at fault in this mess as well as Goodell. Goodell is just doing what he can to hang himself.

I felt this would be the punishment from the get go. After the Ray Rice incident and the focus on domestic abuse by players the NFL was not going to play around with this.

Clearly Peterson should have not talked about any of this in public. It looks like the NFL took note of every word he said and used it again him. Even with the appeal it's hard to see him playing any this year.

I see this as a huge breach of trust between the league and the players/union.

It's deteriorated into a case of "he said/he said" with regards to what was originally agreed to when the league got to make the Peterson situation disappear when it first happened.

The league and its' Commissioner have arbitrarily ruled from on-high regarding player behavior and discipline for far too long, without a clear code of conduct and a clear set of rules.

And it continues to blow up in their faces.

I agree the league just makes things up as they go along, but I don't see how this particular ruling hurts the commissioner. The entire controversy from this past summer came down to the simple fact that the league (i.e. Goodell) was too lenient on Rice - which was pretty darn ironic, if you ask me. But that's a mistake they won't be making again, as evidenced here. So whatever happens in the appeal doesn't matter, the League (Commish) looks to be "tough on crime" and we won't get the public outcry or media circus we saw this past September.

The league is doing what I said they should have done with Rice: throw the book at him and make the NFLPA play the part of buttholes by defending the indefensible.
