After watching MNF I'm convinced...

We needed to make a change in our special teams. Whether Rossum is the answer or not, I don't know. But there were three explosive special teams plays made last night. In fact, the only reason Denver was even in the game at halftime is because of Royal's returns...

I really hope we can find some explosiveness out our return game like that.

or

At least catch the freaking punt and dont let it roll inside the five. Oh, and please just catch the punt in general as well.

Since we are just an average middle of the pack team, I think we are going to win or lose most of the games by slim margins this year. A great returner could have made a big difference between ending up 7-9 or 10-6.

At the very least, we now have something to look forward too when the other team punts. Might not ever materialize, but at least when the other team punts the fans don't just automatically expect a fair catch.

...Dallas average starting position is the 25 yard line which ranks near the bottom of the league...per Sturm:

The Cowboys rank #30 in the NFL in starting field position. Only Tennessee (0-5) and St Louis (0-5) start every possession deeper in their own territory. In the Cowboys 57 offensive drives, they have averaged getting the ball at their own 25 yard line.

...add drive-killing penalties and turnovers to this equation and it's no wonder Dallas is 3-2 instead of 5-0...the defense is also near the bottom of the league in takeaways...now throw questionable red-zone calls into the mix and you can start to grasp why leading the league in yds per game offense is'nt registering on the scoreboard...

we lead the league in fewest 3-and-outs
so we need less TOs and less field to cover
Rossum is a great pickup

It is at this time that I would like to remind all that Eddie Royal was my #1 wish in that draft and I told Jerry he would solve our problem @ #2 WR AND return duties.

On field position after kickoff returns, we're right in the middle of the league, ranked 16th at 25.0. So the problem isn't really our kickoff returns, it's the lack of getting turnovers in good field position, forcing teams to punt from deep in their own territory or getting decent punt returns.

It did not take a MNF game to know the importance of special teams. One reason Russom is in Dallas is because they are looking to be more productive in this area it is the reason we have looked to others like Newman and Felix as well as the reason we drafted a kicker for kickoffs. Dallas coaches understand the importance of special teams and have been addressing it and looking to improve it.

Even if he Rossum never takes one all of the way, if he just averages 10 more yards per return it would be HUGE!!

Rossum was awesome: 7 years ago. At least he'll catch it 99% of the time and make good decisions. Crayton? not so much........

He posted his best avg in a season last year when he avg. 26.8 a with a TD. on kickoffs and his punt return avg was it's highest last year with 14.9 a return.

Were they explosive returns or piss poor coverage? There is a lot of that going around, see Saints/Giants game.

Anything but the perpetual fair catcher AKA #84 would be a significant improvement.
