I think the critical stats start with points scored; against the D and by the O. leave off defensive scores and special teams scores.

Then 3rd down conversion rates. yards per drive. Put that all together and you have a much better idea of what is a good Offense and what is a good Defense.

Because the defense controls how many yards are gained or lost. The defense a lot of times doesn't have anything to do with points scored.

For example, what if Dak throws a pick at our own 30? Then the defense gets a three and out, but the opposing team is still in FG range. Should those points count against the defense?

The team with more yards frequently loses the game. There are often 150 garbage yards at the end of a game when the winning team just plays off the last quarter to run out the clock with a 20+ point lead.

Plus, you get ZERO offensive/defensive yards for a kickoff return, punt return, or interception return for a touchdown. You get ZERO yards for a long pass interference play. Penalties don't show up in the yardage.

Yards mean almost nothing.

Yeah, but yards from special teams aren't included in defensive stats. Points against is actually a pretty bad stat to measure a defense by itself. A defense should be ranked by several stats factored in, which is what is going on now with next gen efficiency type stats that you see now.

Not bad, not bad at all.......certainly the kind of receipt for a post season dance ( sorry if repost, out of pocket for a couple days )

2017 - Week 1

League Leaders - Offense
Total Offense (YPG) Complete List
KC_logo-80x90.gif
1. Kansas City Chiefs 537.0
2. Minnesota Vikings 470.0
3. Buffalo Bills 408.0
4. Dallas Cowboys 392.0
5. Los Angeles 3

Kansas City and Dallas racked up yardage against great defenses. Minnesota, Buffalo, and Los Angeles racked up a lot of yards against pathetic defenses.

The only stats I look at (other than points) are turnovers, 3rd-down percentage, and sometimes time of possession.

Neither are 60-yard interference plays. Or defensive holding calls that result in automatic first downs.

Those last 90 garbage yards do count, so good teams are hurt because of their dominance.
