Draft Dish: Texas A&M QB Johnson must overhaul delivery
Russ Lande
SN Icon Sporting News .ORLANDO, Fla. — As the rain poured down Monday, the players at the East-West Shrine Game were forced inside, to go through no-pads practices in a hotel ballroom. Some news, notes and observations from the weigh-ins and practices:

• Texas A&M QB Jerrod Johnson looked outstanding during the weigh-in at 6-5 and almost thin for a 250-pound man. In practice, he showed the same elite arm strength that excites NFL coaches but he also showed a long, windup delivery that must be totally reworked to make it in the NFL.

• Mississippi State C J.C. Brignone (6-1, 304) started the day badly when he measured in as shorter than expected and with only 29 3/4-inch arms. It's an issue because NFL linemen with arms shorter than 30 inches usually struggle. In practice, those short arms were an issue because he couldn't jolt or and get a hold of defensive linemen and was beaten consistently. He must perform well the rest of the week in pads to make amends.

•Stanford WR Ryan Whalen (6-1, 204) looked the part on film and during the weigh-in, and he showed good hands making some tough catches up near the wall in the ballroom between two defenders.

• Wisconsin QB Scott Tolzien (6-2, 209) showed a much stronger arm Monday than we had seen on film. He must continue to throw well the next two days to improve his draft stock.

•There are concerns about Oklahoma State MLB Orie Lemon's athleticism, but there is no doubt about his strength after he measured in at a muscular 6-0 1/2 and 244 pounds. His lack of athleticism will hinder his draft stock, but coaches using a 3-4 defensive scheme will like his ability to take on blockers.

The first of two big pre-draft scouting All Star events begin this week in Orlando as players gather for the traditional East-West Shrine Game. As TFY did last year, here are the results of the West practice with additional draft impacting news which follows.
JC Brignone OL Mississippi State

Tues: Quick, explosive and blocks with solid fundamentals yet got pushed off the ball by larger

defensive linemen.

Wed:

————–

Cortez Allen DB Citadel

Tues: Looked terrific in drills, very fluid and smooth yet did not translate those skills into production during one-on-one drills or in scrimmage.

Wed:

—–

Dan Bailey PK Oklahoma State

Tues: Solid kick-off leg. Booted the ball into the opposing end-zone.

Wed:

——–

Brandon Bair DL Oregon

Tues: Looked dominant all afternoon to the point that he was being double teamed late in the session. Showed quickness, athleticism and technique with his hands.

Wed:

——-

Joseph Barksdale OL LSU

Tues: Like what we saw from Barksdale at left tackle today. Fundamentally sound and cut off the edge in one-on-one drills. Struggled on the right side.

Wed:

——–

Nicholas Bellore LB Central Michigan

Tues: Tough, two down defender that struggled making plays outside the box.

.....

Notes: Sources have told us part of the problem for Scott Tolzien is the Wisconsin quarterback is just not a confident kid. Working and changing his mechanics have not helped the issue. Tolzien has been recently working with former NFL quarterback Chad Pennington. Remember Tony Washington- the talented offensive tackle prospect from Abilene Christian whose off the field issues were well documented leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft? No NFL team went near Washington but several CFL teams have allegedly shown a lot of interest in the athletic pass blocker. We are told Canadian authorities are holding up the works at this point. Finally- quote of the day. When someone mentioned that Marvin Austin looked in shape and ready to go during his dominant performance this morning, someone quipped, “Wearing a single digit jersey in college probably made him look fatter than he is!” Something to think about.

The first of two big pre-draft scouting All Star events begin this week in Orlando as players gather for the traditional East-West Shrine Game. As TFY did last year, here are the results of the East practice with additional draft impacting news which follows. Updated: Tuesday East Practice
David Arkin OL Missouri State

Tues: Had his moments. Held up Marvin Austin when he got leverage but also got rag-dolled at times.

Wed:

—

Marvin Austin DL North Carolina

Tues: Started slow but really picked it up. Showed a lot of power, quickness and explosion.

Rarely got held up off the line.

Wed:

—

Ryan Bartholomew OL Syracuse

Tues:

Moves well yet got smoked on a number of plays and on the ground too much.

Wed:

—

Bryant Browning OL Ohio State
Tues: Awful technician; narrow base and does not sink his butt which adversely effected his run

blocking ability. Moved well and solid in pass protection.

Wed:

Marvin Austin could be a sleeper. TONS of potential with a bunch of red flags. If he stayed on the field and out of trouble this past year he could easily be mentioned in the top half of round 1.

Thanks for the info Cowboy Joe. This is your time of the year to shine. Hope to see you on TV again.

Johnson has some similarities to Leftwich, I suppose.

Big fan of Marvin Austin. If Cowboys can get Quinn in first, Austin would be nice pick in the 2nd. If not for the off field stuff, Austin's a first rounder no question.
