AIKMAN RATINGS
Thru Week 5
The 2014 season has been marked by substantial volatility in the Aikman Ratings, perhaps best shown by the rise of the Chargers this week from 15th place (152.8 after Week 4) to 1st in the Aikman Combined Ratings.
San Diego had a huge win over the Jets in terms of dominance on both sides of the ball and displaced the Bengals, who fell all the way to 8th after being wiped out by New England. The Chargers advanced from 16th to 6th in Aikman Offense and from 13th to 6th in Aikman Defense.
The Saints returned to 1st on Aikman Offense after a one week absence, while the Ravens are the 5th different team in as many weeks to lead on Aikman Defense

The Aikman Combined Ratings usually show a fairly close correlation to NFL won-lost records, so one surprise so far is to find the Eagles sitting at 28th despite their 4-1 record.
Offensively, the Eagles are hurt by their 12 turnovers which lead the league, a low success rate in the red zone and a below-average yards per rush. Defensively, they are especially low in number of first downs allowed.

The Saints are 1st in Aikman Offense at 94.4, but last in Aikman Defense. Their 54.1 defensive ranking translates to allowing their opponents moving the ball at a 95.9 clip against them.

Interestingly enough, Aikman has us with a defensive advantage over the Seahawks, but then again Rolando McClain and Bruce Carter are big parts of that.
