AIKMAN RATINGS
Thru Week 7
As the season approaches the midway point, the Aikman Ratings are more and more reflecting the perceived balance of power in the NFL, with the top seven teams all having a record of 5-2 or better.
After their big win over San Francisco, the Broncos move into 1st in the Aikman Combined Ratings, sliding ahead of last week’s leader, the Ravens. At 170.4 and 168.3, respectively, these two teams have opened up a bit of distance ahead of the other 30 member clubs.
The Broncos also moved up into first in Aikman Offense, displacing the Saints, who fell to fourth as the Cowboys and Packers also advanced.
In Aikman Defense, it was the Ravens taking over first place after the Lions enjoyed a week in first. Baltimore and Detroit are clearly the top two Aikman defenses so far in 2014.
The NFL’s yards only method agrees with the Lions, but only casts the Ravens in the middle of the pack. Unlike the simplistic NFL method, the Aikmans take into account that Baltimore’s defense actually leads the league at a defense’s primary responsibility – keeping points off the scoreboard. Also serving the Ravens well is a stingy red-zone defense that is allowing only 3.23 points per possession, nearly a full point better than any other team.

While the Aikman Combined Ratings generally line up in a manner consistent with won-loss records, the Cardinals and Eagles are two teams whose victory totals exceed their Aikman positions.
The Cardinals are 13th in the latest Aikman Combined Ratings and are 17th in Aikman Offense and 8th in Aikman Defense. We note that they have beaten four teams lower in the Aikman Combined and lost to the #1 Broncos. Their only result that is different than one would expect from the Aikman Combined Ratings is their one-point win over the #6 Chargers in Week 1.
The Eagles also have had a suspect schedule to date with only one opponent (the #4 Colts whom they beat) among the top 17 teams in the current Aikman Combined. Philadelphia is 9th in offense as measured by yards only, but ranks just 26th in Aikman Offense. The Eagles are 13th in Offensive Points per Game, 26th in Red-Zone Points per Possession and a distant 32nd in Turnovers per Game – all factors detracting from their Aikman Offense standing.
