It all starts up front. The O-Line we had in the early 90s would dominate late in games and we were able to just pound the ball with Emmitt when we had a lead. By midway through the 4th quarter you could see the opposing D-Line just wilting under the weight of our O-Linemen.

Those guys weren't just big but they were strong, tough, and had the endurance and will to play for 60 minutes. They also took a LOT of pride in what they did.


Also, the defense didn't give up easy scores in the 4th quarter. :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:

I agree with much of that but I would also say Dallas was an overall strong team offense, defense and special teams. When you are good in all 3 phases of the game it makes it much easier to win.

How do you win in Chess?

The big pieces ultimatley position in to win the final contest, but the pawns up front need to set up the big pieces for the strategic win.

Football is much the same with the OL and DL.

The team whose pans win that game up front gives their bigger pieces the better chance to win the final contest, and if those bigger pieces are more talented, they will do it every time.

That's how the 90s Cowboys did it.

The 2012 Cowboys have the big pieces, but do they have enough of the pawns?

Well I think saying what made them great is hard to do cause really you can't point at any level of the team and say that is what made them great.

Whatever fancies your eye is what made them great really. On offense, if you like QBs, they had Aikman, if you like RBs, they had Emmitt, if you like WRs they had Irvin, if you like TE they had Noveck, OL, even FB were all filled.

On D, they had DL with Haley, LBs you had Norton, CB you had Smith and eventually Sanders, S you had Woodson and Marion, and I'm just listing some of the guys on every level of the D for that team.

It wasn't as simple as just the OL and DL, it was the total team as they had talent at every level of their D along with a versatile offense that could get ahead by throwing the ball, then wear you down with the run in the second half with a D that had a pass rush and secondary built to make sure you couldn't throw the ball at will against them to come back.

that team was really built on closing strong in fourth quarter. But none of that happens if Aikman isn't cool under pressure. Sometimes I didn't know how much Aikman really cared because it was same stoic face all the time. Years later we know how important it was to Troy it was just his way of dealing with those pressure situations.

Where else would a QB and RB give credit, they also buy their OL all kinds of stuff for helping them during the season. Thats what great players do, show appreciation for the help they received.

Norton would give credit to the DL in front of him also, just like Woodson, Smith, and Marion would.

They won as a team, without Aikman, Irvin, and Emmitt, the OL would've been useless so it goes both ways and big time on D where any weakness can be exploited.

Yup, hence the old cliche - "Games are won and lost in the trenches"

On a side note, IMO what made those SB teams was not just the talent but that NOBODY was going to outwork us, and I mean that pertaining to the Training Camps and practices during the week.

Thats what made that team a dynasty - Jimmy wouldn't let them just play to their capabilities, he pushed them beyond.

Talent takes you so far, but throw in hard work and you have the 90s Cowboys.

Those guys had such charisma and personality.

Nate could be so funny and interesting. Michael is a million watt light bulb. Troy might be the best broadcaster in the game. Daryl does a nice job. Emmitt is awkward but energetic. Darren Woodson carries himself with class and good sense.

All those guys had leadership qualities...and there were a lot of other strong characters in the locker rom.

It was a different generation back then.
