The Patriots have moved 1.3 points ahead of the NFL’s other 13-2 team, the Cowboys. Dallas led by 0.7 after Week 15, but that was before the Patriots turned in a dominant defensive performance against the Jets that boosted them from 6th to 3rd in Aikman Defense and put them atop the Aikman Combined.

The Falcons continue atop Aikman Offense for the third straight week, but we have a new leader in Aikman Defense. The Giants, rising from 8th place during the course of the last five weeks, have opened up a 2.0-point advantage over the Ravens, whose four-week run is over.

We got the Browns when they were way down. Not sure what QB they were on when we played them. NFC east is a bit** to make your stats this year.

The patriots have benifted from a weak division for so long now. I don't think Brady has ever even had a qb rivilary in his own division.
Going off memory but the only other good QB in that division for a long times was Pennington imo. And he got cramped on for having a weak arm.

So yea, no real competition for Brady lol

The Dallas Cowboys stay on top of Football Outsiders' DVOA ratings this week with a big win over Detroit, and the New England Patriots stay right behind them with a big win of their own. Both teams are higher in weighted DVOA than in full-season DVOA, as they've played some of their best football in recent weeks. The Cowboys had 59.7% DVOA in their 42-21 win over Detroit, their best single game all season by DVOA. Three of the Cowboys' top four games of the year have come over the past five weeks, starting with the Thanksgiving win over Washington.

Of course, another way to split the Patriots' season would be to look at the defense before and after the Jamie Collins trade. In that case, you end up with 1.2% DVOA in Weeks 1-8 (18th) and -6.6% DVOA in Weeks 9-16 (10th).

Obviously, the Patriots' easy schedule is a big reason why the defense has looked so good in the past few weeks. The Patriots have played the easiest schedule in the NFL this season, and during their current six-game winning streak, every offense they've faced has been ranked in the bottom 10 of offensive DVOA. However, the Patriots have improved on defense even after accounting for this easy schedule. If we used unadjusted VOA, their defense over the past six weeks would have a rating of -28.3%, by far the best in the league over that span.

Regular Football Outsiders know that I keep refering to 2016 as The Year of No Great Teams, but Dallas and New England do keep inching up in DVOA and are starting to get near other teams that finished past seasons at No. 1. Right now, the 1993 Dallas Cowboys have the lowest DVOA rating for a No. 1 team, at 24.9%. The Cowboys and/or Patriots could pass that with strong wins in Week 17. There's even less chance of the Cowboys and/or Patriots finishing the season with the lowest weighted DVOA for a No. 1 team. That currently belongs to the 2001 San Francisco 49ers, who ended the regular season with 25.0% weighted DVOA.

its crazy how good of a situation the patriots are in. Their division stunk for years. Never really had another good QB in the division. How many straight years have the patriot won that division? I believe 7 or 8 years. Crazy.

Like the 49ers in the old NFC West. Buffalo hasn't had a decent quarterback since Jim Kelly...and that's almost twenty years ago. Ditto for Miami since Marino retired 16 years ago...and the Jets, apart from Pennington, don't have anything to crow about over the last ten years either. IOW, quarterback play in the AFC East has been a fabulous disaster apart from Brady. About the only quarterback you could say was of decent talent was Pennington, the only one to get north of 90 on passer rating...and he never had a 4,000 yd + season. Sanchez, Fiedler, Bledsoe, Holcomb, Johnson, Flutie, Van Pelt, etc....all flamed out. You couldn't put any one of them next to Tom Brady and keep a straight face.

How bad was Sanchez in particular? Consider this...the Jets rolled up about 5100 rushing yds in the two seasons 2009-10, while Sanchez put up a 53 - 54% completion rate and a 29 - 33 td-int rate.

I heard on one of the telecasts last weekend that the Patriots have had a first round bye for the last 7 or 8 seasons. Unreal.

Have the Patriots move to the NFC East, and we'll talk then.

Didn't realize that Atlanta's defense was so bad.
They do have some pass-rushers.
But if the overall D is that bad, good luck going all the way.
