Troy Aikman is looking out for Tony Romo and the future of the Dallas Cowboys.
With the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Hall of Famer believes the Cowboys are in the perfect position to draft their quarterback of the future to take over for when Romo finally hangs it up. Aikman compares the Cowboys situation to that of Brett Favre and the Packers from over 10 years ago.
“If there is a player who…is what you view as a franchise quarterback, I think you have to take that guy,” Aikman said, via ProFootballTalk. “Jerry [Jones] is all in now and certainly he feels Tony Romo can play another three or four seasons, but I liken it a little to the Green Bay situation when the Packers took Aaron Rodgers.
“At the time, Brett Favre had never missed a game. And he would go on to never miss a game for three more years. In Dallas, we all know what happened with Romo going down last season and the backup situation, although I think their problems went beyond the quarterback position. To me, if you have a chance to add a franchise quarterback, and if you’re going to the team that Jerry thinks they are going to be, then you’re never going to be in this [draft] position again, at least not anytime soon.
“To have a chance to set your team up for 15 years, I don’t know how you bypass that.”

I don't disagree at all. If you feel that guy is a franchise caliber QB, take him at 4.

Don't just take the 20th ranked person on your board because he is a QB though.

I think Romo makes it all 16 games next season.

I hope so but he hasn't done it in 3 years. I think he can realistically be there for 12-15 games though.

Every offseason, Romo works on something to improve his game---this year, he needs to work on getting rid of the ball quicker to preserve his body. Tom Brady and Eli Manning don't get hurt because they get rid of the ball. Romo broke his clavicle the second time because he held on to the ball for an insane amount of time.

Unfortunately, part of that is the offensive design so a lot of people will have to change their habits.

Personally, I think all of the big 3 have good potential to become franchise QBs so I'll be very disappointed if we don't draft one. Doubtful that all 3 WILL become franchise QBs though, so there is big risk involved for the Cowboys. Sure hope both their evaluation skills as well as their development skills are good enough on this topic. I have my doubts on that, but only time will tell.

As for the ranking. What if you had 4-6 picks rated as a 95 say and the next 14-16 picks all rated 94 or 93. If that was the case, take the QB. However, if the 20th pick (first QB) was a 87 or so, then yeah, I'd agree with you - don't take the QB. I think all 3 QBs are at least near the very top of the skill heap though. Other, lesser positions might be a hair better - but nowhere near better enough to skip out on a possible franchise QB.

I would agree but not all teams will see any particular player the same way. I also think being it is the QB position it carries some weight. It is like saying why do QB get paid more than other players? because of the position they play.

He might. But even if he does, it doesn't mean he will be better than or even as good as he was in 2014. Not only injuries, but age is starting to creep up with him. Other QBs have started to decline at his age. Romo might as well.

I agree.

I just look back at the 2011 draft and I would cringe if we make mistakes that some teams made that year. Jake Locker, Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert went before players such as Ryan Kerrigan, Tyron Smith, JJ Watt, Robert Quinn and Mike Poncey. What is even sadder is that the Titans, Vikings and Jaguars all spent another first on a QB just a few years later.

Aikman is funny. When Aikman was having trouble making it through a season, Jimmy drafted another 1st round QB, and he wasn't happy about that at all. Romo's age does not make a difference, the reasoning he provided was based on Romo's availability and durability.

Throughout Aikman's entire career with Dallas, even at the end when he had back and head concerns, he was extremely sensitive about any QB who might displace him being brought into the organization.

Drafting a QB this for this season probably isn't going to do the Cowboys much good if Romo misses time.

If the Cowboys draft a QB at #4, he should have an advantage many other QBs drafted early don't: a good offensive line. That can make a huge difference in a guy's chances of adjusting to the pro game.

The problem I see with drafting a QB high this year is that there is little to no readily apparent difference between most QBs on the draft board. How much of a difference between the Wentz/Goff etc. and Cook/Cardale Jones etc.? I think this draft, the QBs are the biggest unknowns and guesses.

They would have to have one weird board to have Goff, Lynch or Wentz at number 20.

Not really, maybe I should've put top 10 but there are plenty of pundits that don't see any great QB prospects in this draft. QB is automatically overrated due to the importance of the position. Truthfully, I will be happy with anybody at our pick, I just don't want the team to reach to fill the QB position because every year it seems like a few QB prospects shoot up in the draft based on their position even though they have no business being that high.

This is an unusual draft class and that is what some people just do not grasp. Normally by this point you can flesh out the top four or five prospects. Right now people cannot even agree on who the top player is.
