AirTran does not renew Vick deal

ATLANTA (AP) -- AirTran Airways has ended its relationship with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who has been a pitchman for the airline since 2004, but whose image has been tarnished in several off-field incidents.

"Michael's contract expired May 8, and we advised him then that we would not renew it," AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson said Thursday.

Hutcheson said Vick had appeared on five billboards and had done radio commercials under a one-year contract, which had been renewed twice before. He said AirTran has Falcons running back Warrick Dunn under contract, and other sports celebrities in other cities.

Most recently, Vick's name has been dragged into a Virginia investigation of dog fighting after authorities confiscated dozens of dogs at property owned by Vick and said they found evidence related to fighting.

Among Vick's other publicity problems, he was sued by a woman who claimed he gave her herpes, he made an obscene gesture to spectators while leaving the field after a game, and security screeners at the Miami airport stopped him from boarding an AirTran flight in January with a water bottle that turned out to have a hidden compartment. Vick said he used it to store jewelry, and police found no evidence of smuggled drugs.

Especially stinging to AirTran, though, was that Vick's publicist blamed the airline when the quarterback known for his quickness failed to arrive in Washington to speak before Congress. AirTran said Vick had ample opportunities to get to his destination on AirTran but chose not to.

Yet another reason to put citizenship high on your priorities list if you are an athlete.

Kobe Bryant lost an estimated $70 million dollars in sponsorship deals after he screwed that hotel worker in Denver and was accused of rape. Somehow I don't think she was that good.

Vick is going to find out the hard way that his stupidity is going to cost him dearly. He was becoming one of the top players in terms of commercials but that will all go away now as sponsors will avoid him like the plague.

It happened to Ray Lewis too after his involvement in a murder but he was able to recover fairly quickly as he wasn't involved in anything else. Kobe also has recovered quite a bit but he will never get back what he blew.

It is bad enough when a guy who isn't a "face" does something dumb but for a name player with lots of endorsements it is just plain stupid.

He's rehabbed his image considerably since then. However, Kobe is a good looking kid who comes from a solid family, he's articulate, intelligent, and one of the top players in the game. He never had any troubles before or after. He also spoke directly to the press on several occassions about the case and appeared genuinely contrite for cheating on his wife. (I won't speculate as to his guilt here)

Vick is almost the complete opposite. Here's a guy who it appears has lied about his role -- directly to the commish. He's had problems before. And he's certainly not one of the top players in the league.

If I were Vick, I wouldn't want my name associated with Air Tran. Talk about a craptastic airline.

I'm sure Air Tran is thinking the samething about Vick.

I think the biggest question is what took them so long?

I agree with the article when it points out that Vick's agent threw them under the bus, I bet that really didn't sit well with AirTran, to say the least.

Vick can come back from this, but he needs an image-overhaul and he needs to re-evaluate who his friends are.

I'd pay for an Airtran ticket before I'd pay 10 cents for anything to do with Vick

It took Kobe about two to three years to get back in good graces. It may take Vick longer due to his attitude.

Odd. It's almost been a full 24 hours since this thread was posted and no one has yet argued how the CEO, president, etc. of AirTran can treat its employee, Vick, like this.

because that argument wouldnt make any sense.

plus they didnt drop him as a sponsor they just nonrenewed him. that just a business decsion.

im just interested to see whethere they are going to indict him. the evidence that ive been hearing is kinda vague. but if there are multiple witnesses linking him as a participant in what went on in that house he is in trouble.

Okey-dokey. I'm just saying that some forum members see Goodell working in the best interest of the league, in compliance with old and new policies, while other members do not.

what does goodell have to do with anything that has been discussed in this thread?

im well aware what 'some forum members' think and i know you read the goodell thread explaining why i disagree with plenty of cited examples from the old and new policies.

at least he is showing proper restraint with vick and allowing the legal process to go forward unlike his previous arrogantly foolish activity.

Some members of the forum believe that Goodell has shown not only proper restraint in all matters, but has also demonstrated unnecessary patience while exercising his authority. JMO.

well it was proper that it is going to get him sued for breahc of contract. it really doesnt matter what fans think mang its about what authority he is actually granted by the CBA. to me its very obvious that he stepped outside that authority given the parameters of the old CBA.

i can understand wanting to see jones' punished. the guy is a punk. i just dont like the fact that Goodell who has zero legal expertise thinks he is more able to judge guilt than a court of law.

you do realize that all of jones court cases that are pending with the exception of the nevada stuff is to be resolved next month?
