Before Jason Garrett found himself a home in Dallas with the Cowboys, he spent time on the Miami Dolphins coaching staff under Nick Saban.
Saban, now the head coach at Alabama, was searching for his next quarterbacks coach in 2005. He had gone through about 10 interviews and wasn't impressed with any of the candidates. That's when Scott Linehan and Hudson Houck, formerly with the Dolphins, recommended Coach Saban interview Garrett for the job.
The current Dallas Cowboys head coach left quite the impression after meeting with Coach Saban.
“Scott Linehan and all the other offensive coaches who had coached in the league … they all knew Jason, and they said, ‘You’ve got to interview Jason Garrett,’” Saban said, via AL.com. “I said, ‘The guy’s never even coached. How can you recommend him for a coaching job?’
“And I interviewed him, and he was by far the best candidate. And I said that even after a year — after his first year of being a coach — I really considered him to promote him to [offensive] coordinator and call the plays because he was that good a coach that quickly because he’s a very bright guy and really could relate well with the players.”
Linehan was the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins before taking the head coaching job with the Rams. Saban replaced him with Mike Mularkey, but reflecting back on it, he wishes things would have gone differently. Saban had some kind words about Garrett earlier this month in the video embedded below.

That J-Lo pic is very distracting at the bottom of the webpage. I... can't... take... my... eyes...

Anyhoo, it is always impressive for a coach's or player's peers to make comments respecting them publicly--especially peers who are highly regarded themselves. Unless of course the person in question is associated with the Dallas Cowboys, negating those comments automatically. It's some sort of unwritten rule that's brought up in discussion from time to time.

What else do you expect him to say?

Like, literally anything?

You guys just looks silly trying to undermine stuff like this. Nick Saban thinks highly of the coach and is willing to go on record with it publicly. It is what it is. You'll just have to find some way to reconcile that fact--whatever it's worth--with your worldview.

Plus he did not have to say his biggest mistake was that he did not make Jason OC once Linehan left to go to St. Louis. What was that a slam on Mike Mularkey whom he did make OC?

It kind of was. Or not a slam, but it's a pretty clear indication that he thought Jason--even back then--was a better candidate for that job.

Just saying if I'm Mike Malarkey and I hear Sabin say the biggest mistake I made was not making Jason my OC. I don't think Saban is complimenting him as some suggest because what else is he going to say. However this comes from those who do not care for Garrett and as they put it "What else do you expect them to say?"

Am I crazy or did he say that Linehan went on to coach the "St.Louis Cardinals"?

I read somewhere when Saban took the Alabama job he considered hiring Garrett to be his OC at Bama as well.

Yep. I heard that as well, of course, that can always be countered by 'who was he *supposed* to hire? And then we can go round and round again. Or, we can take the man at his word that he things Jason is pretty good offensive coach.

The second it was clear that Saban would leave the Fins - like in November - Jerry got it in his head that he wanted Garrett to work under Parcells. That, honestly, was one heck of a bright plan. BP is a great coaching mentor. I think Jason would have grown more quickly had that happened.

Jason is all the things Saban said. He also has some faults that Saban would have covered up as a smart head coach.

Jason with the right staff (finally) can also cover up those weak spots.
