Alabama notebook: Mallett hype motivates McElroy

McElroy said it inspired him throughout the year. While Mallett was a second-team all-SEC player, McElroy led the Crimson Tide to a national championship.
"I was playing the whole season with a chip on my shoulder," McElroy said.
Maybe it will motivate McElroy again. When Alabama plays at Arkansas on Saturday, it's Mallett who is drawing early Heisman Trophy hype and it's McElroy who is -- don't look now -- the nation's best passer.
McElroy leads the nation in pass efficiency.
"That's pretty cool," McElroy said, his facial expression saying he was unaware of that feat.
McElroy has a 200 pass-efficiency rating through three games. He has met his 145 goal in all three games, but don't ask him how to compute it. Mallett is third in the SEC at 186.5.
