Alan Ball... does he have a chance?

I just remembered about this guy... I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about him, but I know that some people were high on his potential (I remember TNew saying that he was "a player" or something to that extent). Now that we've drafted two corners and picked up Pacman, it seems like he's gotten lost in the sea of talent we have at CB now. Anyone think he even makes the squad this year?

Alan Ball is a fluid corner from what I've read, just go back to the Dallas Cowboys picks thread in the '07 zone, and read the positives on him

he's just real lean

I think if you are on a roster heading into training camp you got a chance. It may be slim but if he can do enough to catch the coaches then he has a chance.

Yes, I think he will because the team usually keeps 6 CBs.

Last year - TNew, Henry, Reeves, Jones, Ogelsvy, and Ball

This year - TNew, Henry, Pacman, Jenkins, Scandrick, and Ball

The only thing that could hurt him is if he doesn't play special teams but he would be doubtful to dress on Sundays anyway.

it helps that we don't have a backup SS

which is probably why Watkins is practicing at both, so we only have to carry 4 safeties and have room to keep a promising player like Ball

Last year, we kept 10 DBs; 5 Ss (Williams, Hamlin, Davis, Watkins, Brown) and 5 CBs (Newman, Henry, Reeves, Jones, Oglesby)....

We'll keep 10 again; this time, 4 Ss (Williams, Hamlin, Watkins, Brown) and 6 CBs (Newman, Henry, Jenkins, Jones, Scandrick, Ball)

What a difference a year makes, huh? I'm seriously loving our CB depth/potential this year. Probably the best it's been in years.

Exactly. Wade already said that was a possibility this year.

My thoughts exactly. If this group Newman, Henry, Jenkins, Jones, Scandrick and Ball would have been the CBs last year Dallas might have gone undefeated. Wouldn't two undefeated teams in the SB been interesting.

We played the Patriots last year.... there couldn't have been two undefeated teams, unless we tied.... which would still be a blemish.

I thought Wade already said we'd carry 6 CBs this year. To me that means Newman, Henry, Jenkins & Scandrick are locks as is Pacman once he reinstated. Ball probably also has a good shot. Now if Oglesby or PS CB Butler really step it up Wade could decide to carry 7. He certainly aware Henry's (who also injury prone) contract expires after 09 season & Pacman situation will remain unstable for 1-2 years. We could go heavy at DB but light somewhere else. It all depends how many front 7 players we carry, how many WRs we carry & how many QBs we carry. Doubt we will carry 4 TEs, more then 3 RBs & more then 1 FB. Now last year we did carry 10 OL-- Adams/Kosier/Gurode/Davis/Colombo along with Free/McQuistan/Marten/ Proctor & Berger. Since we didn't draft a backup Center, assume Proctor is a lock unless one of the new OL we signed beats somebody out. Berger was never activated last season but presume they like him but he could be vulnerable if his spot needed elsewhere--say at WR or CB.

That is my guess exactly.

Henry can play safety in a pinch.

Brown could probably play CB in a pinch (not that he'll need to though).

Williams could play safety in a pinch (I kid, I kid).

Seriously, a very, VERY good group of corners and plenty solid at safety. In the nickle and dime packages, we're likely going to have a bunch of corners playing anyway.

With Newman, Henry, Pacman, Jenkins, Scandrick and Ball, who could blame us?
