When I first heard he was being released, I shrugged it off as just another over the hill player who should be making retirement plans. However, the article on ESPN about him has something that has me intrigued. The article says this:
Faneca, 33, didn't say where he might end up, but he figures to attract interest. The Jets owe him $5.25 million, so he probably will sign somewhere for the veterans minimum -- a bargain for a team looking for an accomplished former Super Bowl champion.
So, here's an idea: Sign Faneca to 2 year contract with very little bonus ( 2 millions, let's say ). Having him compete with Kosier for the starting spot this year, which he should win easily, and then keep Kosier as the experienced back up who can play either guard position. Then, in next year's draft, pick up a guard early in the draft and have him be Faneca's understudy in his last year.
I think Faneca would help bring along Free the way he had a hand in the developing of D'Brickashaw Ferguson after his first couple of seasons.
