Exactly! Either that or they wanted that to happen, and expected to talk their way into letting the play stand.

The Lions screwed up, plain and simple.
Yeah if they wanted the ref to say 70 then they were hoping to get away with outright cheating.

He is right about this. Campbell tried to be deceptive and it blew up and his face. He even admitted that in his press conference. He has no one to blame but himself for this.

Allen screwed up but so did the Lions.

And then, the Lions got 2 more tries, including a free play courtesy of Micah, to rectify their half of the screw up.

They didn’t.

The same Peter King who made a video promoting MM with his barn analytics

Why would he wait for clarification when he thought he knew what they wanted? Reporting an eligible receiver doesn't usually take a whole conversation. The ref needs to start the next play, not sit for tea and crumpets.
Exactly
It is the players job to be clear to the ref that he is eligible

How does any of that confuse the cowboys on who is eligible if the ref has to come over and announce to the defense who is eligible? It’s stupid and it cost the Lions.
Exactly, it was dumb but also not in the spirit of the rules. The league requires the offense to notify the refs who them notify the defense because the league does not want offenses sneaking ineligible players into eligible positions. The Lions tried to circumvent that rule. The refs did their jobs.

Yep, the entire episode was a scam by Campbell. It blew up in his face. He could have eaten his crow and taken the PAT. But his ego got the best of him.

The only blown call was the phantom tripping call.
He tried to get cute and it failed. Then his ego caused him to not just kick and tie game. If not for the bogus trip none of those things would have happened

Play clock was ticking.
When it happened the announcers immediately began examining the chain of events. Troy very clearly said clock was stopped when the Lions players were meeting w ref. Sure at some point the refs started the play clock but it wasn't a factor in the ref being able to get the reporting player correct.

we won the Datt gum game. Can't they just accept it. My GAWD...imagine if that was a playoff game. They would be demanding Zeke Elliott get suspended lol an mm fired.

How long have you been watching football? For a thousand years there's been an obligation for the offense to announce any non skill player who wants downfield eligibility. It MUST be shared with the defense. If you don't tell that player #68 is eligible, you're engaging in deception and cheating.

To be a good official .... not be a part of the outcome.

Clock was stopped. He had no reason to hurry.
He wasn't sprinting though, he was trotting off like they often do, to keep the game at a reasonable pace.

I think it was a rhetorical question, pointing out the flaw in Campbell's logic.

I think this is feeling shared by everyone now .........
It should be but it is not. Some of our own fans on here are still saying Lions got screwed. GMFB on NFLN can't let it go this morning.
Thy are even trying to disavow the attempted cheating, saying it was a well designed play.

Haters will find excuses to hate. That is what is comes down to.

I heard by someone, that they did the same before.....too bad, they had 3 tries.....
They tried it 2 years ago is what I heard some analyst say. They did not say if it was successful or how it went down with the refs.

I assume he was counting on the defense to not pay attention to the words coming out of the ref's mouth.
Right. Skipper had reported as eligible all other times from what I understand so the Lions were hoping the defenders would believe he was the eligible one again no matter what number was called.

That was the exact plan. Create confusion on purpose and argue after the fact in they call the penalty. They wanted the ref to 2nd guess himself to the point of letting the play stand.
