Albuquerque Police Officer Fatally Shoots Woman
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. April 22, 2014 (AP)

A 19-year-old woman suspected of stealing a truck was shot and killed during a chase with Albuquerque police, making her the third person in five weeks to be killed by officers and the first since the department was put under federal orders to reduce the use of deadly force and reform a culture of abuse and aggression.

Police Chief Gordon Eden said the shooting occurred Monday morning.

"An officer pursued on foot when the suspect stopped, turned and pointed a handgun at close range," Eden said.

Police identified the woman as Mary Hawkes, the daughter of Danny Hawkes, a retired magistrate judge in Valencia County south of Albuquerque.

Court records show Mary Hawkes had two previous run-ins with the law as an adult, one for drinking in public and another for shoplifting, according to the Albuquerque Journal. As a juvenile, she was charged in 2011 with attempted criminal sexual contact of a child under 13. She was convicted of a lesser battery offense and sentenced to two years of probation.

Police said the shooting was still being investigated and the department expected to release more information at a news conference Wednesday. The department did identify the officer who fired his gun as Jeremy Dear, who has been with the department since November 2007.

Another Fatal shooting here in Albuquerque. Early reports indicate that this person pulled a gun on the cops but, as is customary here in Albuquerque, there should be proof of this from a Lapel Cam. Lots of people get shot here pulling guns on cops, or so we are told. Will wait till more info is released. Hopefully, this is at least a clean shooting but we will see.

I don't know about the other two shootings, but if the perp. really did aim a gun at the cop, then case closed, imo.

It should be as simple as that, but with the events as if late, this shooting us going to cause a stink either way.

I agree, if they have proof to support a weapon. They are all supposed to have Lapel Cams going. If the evidence supports what the Police are saying, no question. The Police did the right thing. If not, that's another story. There are a lot of shootings that happen here where you find the official report claiming that a guy had a weapon and there is no visual evidence of it.

Rumors also circulating that the woman pregnant but that has not yet been confirmed to my knowledge.

Just got to ask yourself, what are the acceptable risks involved with the acquisition and subsequent consumption of a Blakes Lotaburger?

I had a Lotaburger while in Las Cruces for the very first time in my 39 year history and I have to tell you:

Not impressed.

I do really like Albuquerque though and I"m cruising in mid-May for a couple of days in the college area. There's a big fat film industry growing over there and I 'm going to oversee some projects I'm involved with on a consultative basis.
There's some darn good eateries near campus too...

The town reminds me of Austin, TX more than a little bit.

I am not a big Blakes fan either but a lot of people really like them here. I only went because my Son is a fan. I don't know why, he only orders the Chicken Sandwiches. LOL...........

Albuquerque is not so bad and you are correct, there is a growing film industry here. The Law Enforcement, both in ABQ and RR are not ideal but it is what it is.

I had an opportunity to move there several years ago for a management position with Costco.
I was shown the town (parts of it) and offered "x" money and "x" place to live and I couldn't do it.
The place looked seedy as all get out.

Then- years later and occupations abandoned for the better I went back to visit some of my girlfriend's family that lived near campus (where I never got even close to before) and I came away with a very different impression of the place.

"Keep Querque Quirky" was the theme of the area and it reminded me of Austin, where I grew up with "Keep Austin Weird" and the vibe was very much the same.
I liked the free-wheeling college atmosphere there. I'm a little aged now to be in the middle of such affairs, but the feeling was liberating and nice- and the eateries were par excellence. There is some vegan joint... I'm trying to recall the name.
Wait- let me ask me girl... she said "Annapourna's".
Well, this vegan joint- vegan is not my game, my friend- keep that in mind. I'm not a simple, dirty hippy. I'm a complex one...

I don't live the vegan lifestyle, much less a vegetarian one. I needs my BBQ, but I digress:
That place served me up some food that years later I cannot forget. It's going to be the first place I hit when I get there.

I like the town, I have some truly good friends there and that is not something to be discounted lightly and I've never had a bad time whenever I visited.

Plus they have a tremendous Flamenco scene that my girl (a Salsa Dancer of some note) is gaining a heavy interest in (her Aunt lives there and is with the main Flamenco studio and team as a percussionist). I love Flamenco (and anything my woman is interested in) so we might be moving up there in the next 6-12 months to see how we like it.

Maybe we'll be catching a game or two together in the near future!

Blakes was good before they sold the franchise. I liked the double Lota with green chile and cheese.....used to have pretty good BBQ sanwiches too.

Bobs Burgers have the best taco burgers ever. They sell the green chile sauce '505' nation wide now.

And.......for what it's worth, I love Allsups burritos. Gut bombs for sure but I get half a dozen every time I'm in town
with the package hot sauce.

:)

Anything is possible Corso. ABQJr. is much closer to the UNM campus life then I but yes, I believe Annapourna's is still there, over by the Frontier. Hit us up, maybe we can break bread.
