I was trying to find some info. on the No. 1 draft pick for the 49ers and could not find any in the SF Chronicle, granted I did not try that hard. Will any 1st round picks sign before he does? I know the players taken in the top 10 are probably waiting on him so I hope this gets done asap because I want our first rounders their the first day. Any thoughts on how this will play out? If Smith signs I think it will be a domino effect but what do I know.

It does look like agents are waiting for anyone in the 1st round to sign first and slot accordingly. If Alex signs soon I do agree with you that the rest would fall into place rather quickly. From what I've heard reported is that teams are wanting to give 7-8% more than last year and agents are shooting for 10%. Once the market is set it should go fast. We should see a lot happen this week. (I hope!!)

another problem is with no collective barginnig agreement, the length of the contracts cannot exceed 5 years. this maybe causing a problem fitting the guarentees into the rookie or team salary caps.

The contracts can be as long as they want but the Signing bonuses can only be prorated for 5 years.

Well this year's SB can only be prorated over 5 years. I'm sure most contracts will include a two tier bonus, where the second bonus can be prorated over the life of the contract when it is paid.

I think most contracts will be done like Tom Brady's where his SB is split into a Signing bonus and a Roster Bonus in 06 which once a NEW CBA is reached will be changed to a second teir of a SB. Reason is if you do a two teir bonus now the language has to fall under current CBA rules meaning if the second teir is paid next year then it could only be prorated for 4 years which would be the remaining time for the original SB where as if you do it like Tom Brady and change the roster bonus to a signing bonus it could be prorated for the remainder of the contract.
