This is a shame. I was pretty convinced he was gonna succeed and do well in the NFL. His chances are truly running out.

Shame. I think they screwed him up pretty well.

Makes me appreciate how lucky we are with Romo.

What you are seeing with him is what you are seeing with Campbell 4 different offenses in just as many years.

He was also handed the keys to a shiny new offense at the age of 21.

He looked like he was about to really turn the corner when Norv was there, it's a shame for the Niners.

What does the INJURY have to do with him being a bust? Getting hurt doesn't mean you suck, it means you are injured. Doesn't mean you are a bad or good player. If Peyton Manning had been injured during his first training camp and never played an NFL game, he wouldn't have been a bust. He just would have been injured and never had a career. Alex Smith is a bust because he sucks.

I didn't mean his injury made him a bust. It just kills any chance he had of redeeming himself from being a bust. IMO, this could be the end of his career.

Alex Smith reminds me of Drew Henson...big, strong, super smart, has all the tools and by everyone's estimation should be a Great Quarterback...but he just isn't.

As a 49er fan, I couldn't be any happier then to know he's going to be gone. I feel bad he's hurt again, but he's been hurt 3 out of 4 years here. Also he's been bad when healthy. Like legendary bad. As in one of the worst QB's ever.

I was vehemently against selecting him, and wanted Rodgers and or a trade down from the #1 spot. *sigh*

Oh well at least we get some future cap relief after next year and can try to find the next great 49er QB.

Doesn't matter who they drafted (at QB), they would have played him too soon and ruined him either way.

Ouch

. San Francisco 49ers - Alex Smith*, QB Utah

2. Miami Dolphins - Ronnie Brown, RB Auburn

3. Cleveland Browns - Braylon Edwards, WR Michigan

4. Chicago Bears - Cedric Benson, RB Texas

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Carnell Williams, RB Auburn

6. Tennessee Titans - Adam Jones*, CB West Virginia

7. Minnesota Vikings (from Oakland) - Troy Williamson*, WR South Carolina

8. Arizona Cardinals - Antrel Rolle, CB Miami (Fla)

9. Washington Commanders - Carlos Rogers, CB Auburn

10. Detroit Lions - Mike Williams*, WR USC

11. Dallas Cowboys - Demarcus Ware*, DE/OLB Troy State

12. San Diego Chargers (from NY Giants) - Shawne Merriman*, DE/OLB Maryland

13. New Orleans Saints (from Houston)- Jamaal Brown, OT Oklahoma

14. Carolina Panthers - Thomas Davis*, S/OLB Georgia

15. Kansas City Chiefs - Derrick Johnson, LB Texas

16. Houston Texans (from New Orleans) - Travis Johnson, DT Florida State

17. Cincinnati Bengals - David Pollack, DE Georgia

18. Minnesota - Erasmus James, DE Wisconsin

19. St. Louis Rams - Alex Barron, OT Florida State

20. Dallas Cowboys (from Buffalo) - Marcus Spears, DE LSU

21. Jacksonville Jaguars - Matt Jones, QB Arkansas

22. Baltimore Ravens - Mark Clayton, WR Oklahoma

23. Oakland Raiders (from Seattle) - Fabian Washington*, CB Nebraska

24. Green Bay Packers - Aaron Rogers, QB California

25. Washington Commanders (from Denver) - Jason Campbell, QB Auburn

26. Seattle Seahawks (from Oakland through NY Jets) - Chris Spencer, C Ole Miss

27. Atlanta Falcons - Roddy White, WR UAB

28. San Diego Chargers - Luis Castillo, DT Northwestern

29. Indianapolis Colts - Marlin Jackson, CB Michigan

30. Pittsburgh Steelers - Heath Miller*, TE Virginia

31. Philadelphia Eagles - Mike Patterson, DT USC

32. New England Patriots - Logan Mankins, OG Fresno State

Take out Braylon Edwards and potentially Merriman if his career isnt over, we ended up with the best 2 players

Ware
Edwards
Merriman(?)
Pac

Then you got Castillo, Miller and Rodgers and the rest is pretty weak

I'm not so sure that's true. It's true that Rodgers or anyone else would have played early too, but Smith was CLEARLY not ready to play his first year at all. He had probably the worst season a QB has ever had statistically as a rookie with as much playing time as he got.

Rodgers, for example, was much better prepared for the NFL, he came from a pro system, he hadn't played only out of the shotgun in college, and plus I think he had the physical tools and intangibles that Smith has never had. Rodgers has upper tier arm strength. Smith does not. Rodgers I think is more accurate as well. I'm basing this on college too, as I saw both play plenty back in 03 and 04 (Their first college starts were actually against each other in 2003). Not to mention Rodgers seemed to have that "IT" factor and or moxie that good QB's always seem to have. They carry themselves with a certain confidence and swagger and they seem to find ways to succeed despite adversity. Look at Romo, he's had to deal with some hardship early in his career and a lot of expectations, and he's handled it very well and continues to improve every year. That isn't a trait that's found in a lot of players.

I said it before the draft and I still say Rodgers is going to be better than Alex Smith!

Although, I was wrong about that whole "Leftwitch being better than Palmer" thing.
:eek::
