Alex Smith retires

It's clearly the Garret Gilbert show from here as key backup.
Maybe the Cowboys liked what they saw in Gilbert, even in just a week or two appearance.

At least if Dak gets hurt we'll have a top 3 pick.

Tough dude to come back from that horrendous injury and played ok. But playing for that team is certainly not worth the risk. Glad he retired on his own.

Not sure if it was Stephen or MM who said they expect us to sign another vet QB to compete as Dak's backup.

Good for him, he actually needed to retire. Plus it keeps all the sign Alex threads form popping up later.
But we may get...talk him out of retirement threads. :muttley:

I am glad for him because he was so maligned as the 1st pick in his draft and had 5 different OC's in his first 5 seasons. I wonder how Aikman would have done with that?

Smith kept his feelings to himself and just stepped up and did what he was asked to do. That didn't go unnoticed by Reid, a pretty good judge of QB talent, as he actively went after him.

Alex Smith is that poster boy for the type QB we talk about that needs that team around him. He was a very good game manager and that is a positive to me, that's what playing QB is. Brady is the best game manager of all time.

I could be very wrong on this, but given how the club seems very conservative, careful and high strung over cap dollar money right now, I just don't expect very much backup vet QB hunting from this club.
Especially if they've got any indication from the coaches that they like Gilbert, it's not gonna be much vet QB searching, imo.

Only if in some case Gilbert somehow really stinks it up and disappoints big time in summer play to give worries, would i think the club would consider differently.
and who else is out there on the streets in terms of suitable, available vet backups right now ?

I’m actually bummed about this. His last 5 years or so was the best football he ever played. Washington was pretty good with him... wanted him to go somewhere that was a QB away, maybe like Chicago or NEP
