They are vastly more on the metal side.

AIC and NIN were Heavy Grunge and The Pumpkins were Art Grunge.

NIN was more industrial than grunge.i don't hear any elements of grunge in them at all.

AIC is so much better than any band to come out of the grunge era. They wrote great songs and created a totally original sound with Layne and Jerry’s vocals throughout many of their songs.

Had Layne Staley not died so young, and AIC become more prolific, I'm almost certain they would have cemented themselves as my favorite band.

I got into AIC after Layne had passed. But as a teen of the 70's, I relish Greatness. And AIC is That!!

I saw the VH 91 Tour here in OKC Okla, instead of AIC as openers we got the world famous? Baby Animals.
