All Dallas Cowboy Regular Seasons Ranked

I've ranked all seasons according to a formula of 50% record and 50% stats. The stats are evenly weighed Offense and Defense, both yards and points in addition to the turnover margin. These are all in comparison to the rest of the league for those particular seasons.

For seasons with less than 32 teams in the league, I expanded the results to a 32 team league. For example, a team that had a ranked 3rd in the league for a stat in a season where there were 26 teams, the ranking would then go from 3 to 3.7.

Once the final scores are calculated for each season they are ranked from best to worse. Again, these are regular season rankings only. I wanted to do it this way so we could look at the strength of the season and compare it to their playoff results.

In a perfect world, the top ranked regular seasons would be the ones with SB victories. However, as we all know, if that were true then we wouldn't be talking about the Dallas Cowboys.

It's wonderful to have enjoyed 5 championship seasons but the truth is, there should have been at least double that. One thing you can say as a general rule, the Cowboys fought for everything they got, they were very rarely lucky.

According to the formula I used, 1977 was the Cowboys best season in their history. 12-2 record, ranked #1 in both defense and offense in yardage that year, #2 in points scored, #8 in points least points defensively. This team realized it's potential in the playoffs with a SB victory.

Second best season, 1992, their first SB season under Jimmy Johnson with a 13-3 record. Offensively ranked #2 and #4, points and yardage, defensively #5 and #1.

The two Green Bay losses in 1966 and 1967 were close disappointing losses, However, the next two years had an even better team, yet lost back to back against the Browns in the divisonal round.

More recently, the 2007 and 2016 seasons were the ones that got away. those were SB level teams that failed to live up to their potential. the opportunity was there.

Out of 60 seasons, last season is ranked 28th. Seven lesser teams in Cowboy history made the playoffs. The productivity of this team indicate that they should have been a 10-6 team and made the playoffs. They are one of the most underperforming Cowboy teams in history.
