At least in terms of this season simply because the other divisional contender(s) are just as flawed as we are. But the reality is this season is basically a best case scenario of 9-7, maybe 10-6 where we squeak into the playoffs, maybe win a WC game and then get bombed out again in the divisional round.
We were told this team was SB caliber. They clearly are not.
But what is truly lost is any real future as long as Jerry is pulling the strings. Yesterday, he said that he was disappointed. But we've heard that before over and over and over. What I want to know is he really, truly surprised by what he sees?
If the answer to that question is yes, then he's a bigger fool than I ever imagined and this franchise is FUBAR'd. What we have seen yesterday and, frankly, the last three weeks isn't anything out of the norm for this franchise under Garrett. The hallmark of Garrett's run has been inconsistency.......... year to year, game to game. And it's bubbling up again.
Jerry has no one to blame but himself if this thing craters. The warning signs had been there for years with this guy and he choose to defend him, protect him, make excuses for him. Now surely people are going to cite last year and 3-5 and how we turned it around. But did we? We won a bad division and got owned again in the divisional round. Is that the ceiling now? Is that the marker for success? It shouldn't be but I suspect if we do somehow get to 9 wins, the excuses will flow like we've never seen before from certain fans, and sadly, maybe Jerry.
In terms of the actual team right now, I have no idea what has happened with the offense. I can't really believe Garrett has taken over the offense and dictated things to Moore, but the number of people in the media that watched the game and said the creativity is missing from the first three games is depressing. I saw one stat we ran 17 times on first down for less than 3 ypc. That screams Garrett. So what the heck is going on?
Defensively, Richard isn't the answer. That's obvious. Teams have figured out the Legion of Boom style defense. Teams simply just rip apart our soft zones. And when you add in the fact we have zero pass rush, either from the outside (other than a random speed rush from Quinn), and ZERO pass rush from the interior, the defense is what it is. Porous. They have talent limitations (looking at you S and DT) and they have coaching limitations. If there was a way to crap can the entire defensive staff right now and start over midseason, I would do it. But we are stuck. And what you see from this defense is what you get............ which is basically the 2014 and 2016 defenses again.............not very good.
