If you watch the All or Nothing show that features the Cowboys, you may be struck by the paucity of video that shows the Coaches teaching actual football plays, and critiquing their performance in specific ways on tape. But if you go back and watch the previous seasons that features the Cardinals and Rams, you'll find the same thing is true.
It makes me suspect that the teams agreed to allow only limited access to film crews for the show. They allowed some miked-up moments on the field, and allowed them to film the critiques of effort, or motivational talks. They allowed each episode to feature a particular human interest story on a player. But what the teams did NOT allow was any record of their strategies or diagramming of plays to be recorded. Those types of things remain secret to the outside world. So we don't REALLY get a satisfying picture of the real behind the scenes action that takes place on a technical level. We only get the emotional stuff.
For a guy who is more of a perfectionist like myself, I'm left more than a little dissatisfied. Don't get me wrong. I like the series, and enjoyed the previous seasons. The emotional tug is alright. But I'm about halfway through the current season featuring the Cowboys, and realize that I want MORE from the show than I'm going to get, and I understand why. Nevertheless, I'd really like to be a fly on the wall when they get into the nitty-gritty breakdown of plays - like what Garrett was talking about at the retirement press conference when Witten broke down the Y-option play. It was at that moment that I realized what was missing from the All or Nothing show. It reminds me of the old Wendy's commercials from the late 70's. Where's the beef?
