The Superman thing was cool but shouldn't he have to actually dunk it not throw it in the basket?

I agree. That wasn't a dunk. That was a throw.

He made up for it with his volleyball tap dunk.

i think he got lucky it went in because i couldnt tell it wasnt a dunk until a saw a replay, and i dont think he ment to do that, i think he ment to dunk it but couldnt quite make it. I felt bad for green, his shoeless dunk is quite impressive, but people dont realize how hard that is and he had done a similar dunk before that. my favorite dunk was the birthday cake one, that was awesome. all in all, howard was the rightful winner.

and how bout that spurs team winning the shooting stars with the twin towers!!

It was a dunk.

He threw it down from above the rim with force. It doesn't matter that he never grabbed the rim.

???? layups and finger rolls should be concidered dunks then? when have you seen on a gamecast "howard with the 5 foot slam dunk"?

umm, in a layUP and finger roll, the ball goes upward.

dwight howard threw it down.

From several feet away.....a dunk usually mean the player is close to the rim. He was a good foot or more away from the rim.

If that is a dunk I used to dunk all the time. :D

did kareem's skyhook go straight down? no. did he throw it in a downward motion? no

how many times do i have to repeat it. he THREW IT DOWN.

if a player can get high enough and throw it (or put it ) in a downward motion, it's considered a dunk.

there's no rule such as distance or whether you have to touch the rim.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slam_dunk

A slam dunk (or simply a dunk) is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both of his hands over the rim.[citation needed] This is a standard field goal worth two points. The term "slam dunk" was first coined by the late Los Angeles Lakers announcer Chick Hearn.[1]

i like how it says "citation needed" on the definition of a slam dunk.

wikipedia's word on the case is as good as yours or mine.

also, KG threw it downward without having his hands over the rim. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TodJvPTo8Jg

that was considered the #1 dunk of 2003. so by your definition, it's not a dunk?

and here's chris bosh, also counted as a dunk: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xKSKrBUj5Q0

the only difference is the distance. if you're going to define what a dunk is or isn't, then you have to define a certain distance from the rim. no such defined distance exists.

keon clark, also a dunk: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3ALAf186lLA

I got all these links from ISH and RealGM threads discussing whether it was a dunk or not. The general consensus is that it was a dunk.

well, even on the comments from those videos it has people saying they were glorified layups. Those videos are at least within a foot of the rim, howard wasnt even close, he got lucky on that one. I still think he deserved the win but the dunk wasnt that impressive after seeing the replay, the complete opposite of the volley dunk he had or the birthday cake dunk

so it was a dunk :p:

I actually think it was more impressive. I've never seen someone able to get up that high and have the force to throw it down like that.
