WWE Draft 2016: Winners and losers
By Kyle Decker@kfd2010 on Jul 19, 2016, 11:30p

upload_2016-7-20_19-50-46.png

The draft is over and we’re on to the post draft analysis that fills the time after any draft, whether it be WWE, NFL, or your fantasy baseball draft. We’ve always given out grades to both SmackDown and Raw. Now it’s time to look at the overall winners and losers of the night.

Winners:

Raw: Raw won this one outright. The format that allowed them to draft 3 for every 2 SmackDown drafted gave them a unique advantage and they ran with it. They built a better women’s division (champion Charlotte, Sasha Banks, & Paige). They have a better tag team division (champs New Day, Enzo and Cass, the Club). They have the better midcard (Rusev, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Cesaro). They have the attraction Brock Lesnar. There’s no doubt that Raw is the more well rounded show and has more talent with huge upside.

The Shield: The first two men drafted were Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose (Rollins to Raw and Ambrose to SmackDown.) Due to his current Wellness violation, the man who probably would have been number one, Roman Reigns, dropped to the second round, going to Raw prior to Brock Lesnar. Nonetheless, three of the first six picks were former Shield members. The men said that whether it would be together or apart, they’d be running on the top of WWE for years to come. This draft makes that look rather prophetic.

Doping violators: I’m not here to pass judgement on Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar. We don’t know the details of either man’s very recent doping issues: Roman’s 30-day Wellness violation from Raw and Brock’s two failed tests prior to UFC 200. Team Raw didn’t pass judgement either. In fact, they drafted them back to back in round two in their riskiest move of the night.

Bray Wyatt: Bray Wyatt was drafted to a SmackDown behind Dean Ambrose, John Cena, AJ Styles and Randy Orton. While those four are likely to be in the main event scene early on, there’s plenty of room at the top for Bray Wyatt. With John Cena taking on more and more projects such as reality shows, movies, Today Show hosting and Randy already rather part time, there will be plenty of opportunity for the New Face of Fear to become the New Face of SmackDown.

Losers:

SmackDown: SmackDown was always going to be behind the 8-ball given the 3 to 2 format rounds. That mean SmackDown was going to have to draft smart early on to shore up their roster. While they drafted the WWE champion number one, they then went ahead and drafted AJ Styles, John Cena, and Randy Orton - three men 36 and older (Cena and Styles are 39). Cena and Orton are part time and somewhat injury prone. After they picked a Randy Orton who hasn’t even returned from injury, Raw picked the New Day, a team SmackDown was sure to have coveted.

They have a weaker midcard (Corbin, Ziggler, Alberto Del Rio), a thinner women’s division, and after the televised rounds, the only tag team they had at all was American Alpha. (They used later rounds to help bolster it but the stronger teams were already on Raw.) Given how thin their divisions are, we may be seeing a lot of the same feuds for a while there.

And as of right now, they don’t have a tag title nor a women’s title. That may be rectified in the future, but right now, they are missing a good amount of gold.

Cesaro: Tough night for the Swiss Superman. Not only did he not get drafted until the sixth round but he also lost to Chris Jericho (who had already been drafted to Raw) prior. He was damned close to not even getting drafted on television. Cesaro came back to WWE hot after WrestleMania. Today he barely gets drafted on the televised portion. Afterwards, he expressed his disappointment for dropping so far and going to Raw instead of SmackDown. Not the way to endear yourself to the higher ups, Cesaro.

Kevin Owens: Sure he still got drafted, but the man who calls any show he’s on The Kevin Owens show dropped to the fourth round. Even worse, his arch nemesis Sami Zayn got drafted much earlier in the 3rd round. Dropping this far could represent how management views you and could affect his bottom line down the road. However, he’s a prideful man and he will make everyone regret not taking him earlier.

The Cruiserweight Division: After announcing that the cruiserweight division was coming back to Raw last night, Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley drafted only one cruiserweight talent in the first six rounds with Neville in round 6. (You could consider Xavier Woods as well but he’s still tied up in the tag team picture.) Even worse, they let Kalisto, a Cruiserweight favorite, slip to SmackDown and had to settle on his less exciting former Lucha Dragon partner, Sin Cara. The Cruiserweight division is going to need be filled via free agency or it’s going to be dead in the water before it begins.

‘New Era’ WWE Commentary shake-up: Jerry Lawler out, Corey Graves in
By Sean Rueter@s1rude on Jul 20, 2016, 12:48a

upload_2016-7-20_19-51-51.png

The brand split draft didn’t feature any play-by-play men or color commentators being selected by Raw or SmackDown, but WWE used the opportunity to make some changes to the announce teams.

WWE broke the story after Tuesday night’s roster shuffle in a story on WWE.com.

Corey Graves will join Michael Cole & Bryon Saxton in calling Raw each Monday night. Meanwhile, JBL moves over to Tuesdays where he replaces Jerry Lawler. David Otunga will stay on SmackDown along with Mauro Ranallo.

Tom Phillips is the play-by-play voice of both Superstars and Main Event, and he’ll be partnered with Graves and Otunga respectively.

The report doesn’t mention who will call NXT, which had been presided over by Phillips & Graves.

Hall of Famer Lawler is the odd man out here. The King had only recently returned from a suspension triggered by a domestic assault arrest, but was immediately reinstated when the charges were dropped.

WWE Raw to Launch Cruiserweight Division: Details, Comments and Reaction
By Joseph Zucker, Featured Columnist Jul 18, 2016

The Cruiserweight Classic may be a special event for the WWE Network, but fans can soon expect to see cruiserweight wrestling every week on Raw.

On Monday night, WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon announced that a new cruiserweight division will be added to the show following Tuesday's draft and subsequent brand split, per WWE.

WWE had its own light heavyweight division in the late 1990s and then absorbed WCW's cruiserweight division when it purchased the company in 2001. For the most part, though, the light heavyweight and cruiserweight titles were afterthoughts in WWE.

That could prove to be the case again. But WWE has made a significant investment in cruiserweight wrestling by bringing some of the best wrestlers in the world together for the Classic. That event's success shows cruiserweight wrestling has a place on WWE programming.

Dedicating time and resources to a cruiserweight division is also a way for WWE to create a clear delineation between Raw and SmackDown. The brand split will be successful only if the two shows have their own identities.

Part of what made WCW Monday Nitro successful at its peak between 1996 and 1998 was a thriving cruiserweight division that included some of the best in-ring wrestlers in the world. Assuming WWE carries over some of the talent not already under its banner in the cruiserweight class, it can build that on Raw.

Making cruiserweight wrestling a Monday night exclusive gives fans another reason to tune in every week.

Report: Paul Heyman’s contract with WWE has expired
By Geno Mrosko@cagesideseats on Jul 20, 2016, 9:56p

upload_2016-7-21_6-35-37.png

When WWE announced all the wrestlers eligible for the Draft that took place last night (July 19, 2016) in Worcester, Massachusetts, managers were listed alongside the talent they are aligned with. That includes the likes of Lana being paired with Rusev and Maryse being paired with The Miz.

It was interesting, then, that Paul Heyman was not listed next to Brock Lesnar. Now we know why.

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Heyman’s contract with WWE has expired. Because there hasn’t been an agreement on a renewal yet, he hasn’t been mentioned in any way on television in connection to Lesnar, who was drafted to Monday Night Raw.

Heyman’s future could very well depend on how WWE decides to handle Brock, who has been taking hit after hit lately due to failed drug tests leading into his fight at UFC 200. If he’s going to be pushed, it makes no sense not to sign Heyman to continue selling him. But if they’ve soured on him, perhaps there’s no need.

WWE reportedly signs two veterans to stock brand split rosters (potential spoilers)
By Sean Rueter@s1rude on Jul 21, 2016, 1:15p

After news broke of WWE’s now-executed plans to split Raw and SmackDown into separate, distinct rosters, there were a flurry of rumors and reports about moves to re-stock the ranks with past stars and other name veterans to fill out the shows.

The draft came and went earlier this week without any such additions.

Per an exclusive report by PWInsider, two former WWE Superstars are being brought back soon. Mike Johnson’s story says the plans he heard call for the men to be placed on SmackDown, but he notes that could change.

Potential spoilers ahoy...

The wrestlers are Rhyno, who’s been an on-again off-again presence in NXT of late and showed up on the main roster last December for the Dudleyz feud with the Wyatt Family, and Brian Myers, who worked in WWE from the mid-aughts until 2014 as Curt Hawkins, including a prominent run as an “Edge-head” backing the then-World champ along with a pre-’Woo Woo Woo’ Zack Ryder.

They’re interesting depth additions. Rhyno still pops a crowd, and has proven at Full Sail he’s useful as at least upper mid-card enhancement talent. Myers/Hawkins was an entry-level carpenter toward the end of his WWE run, but fans who watched him on the independents (or shows like Superstars) know he’s a good worker. Putting him on SmackDown, where his old tag partner Ryder’s current teammate Mojo Rawley was drafted, could make for an interesting mid-card story, too.

I've been enjoying RAW for the last few months. There's been some misses but that's to be expected. Overall the show has been really good though to the point I actually looked forward to the next episode. And this draft needed to be hit out the park instead it was a routine infield fly ball. I understood the idea of Raw getting 3 picks to SD 2 due to show lengths.... until they announced the cruiserweights were going to be a RAW product. WTH did they need an extra pick for now? They paid a lot of lip service to two equal brands but from where I'm sitting it looks like the same old A show B show. I'll give them a shot but my interest has been dulled.
