These players also had a big impact on the game to make this sport what it is today. As far as talent yes today’s guys are bigger and stronger, but the level of competition remains equal. Today’s football players did not make this game they are recipients of the hard work and dedication by those who came before them.

Fine ........ your right

but they are all so old!!

I was lucky enough to see the majority on that list play and I think many of them belong on the list. Their impact on the NFL was great and as I said helped make the game what it is today.

First off, I never realized that Ronnie Lott was taken 8th overall, same as Roy.. pretty cool..

and Ed Reed the best safety of this decade? Pfft.. He had one great year, a couple of good years, a crap year, and an injured/crap year.. Roy has been more consistent.. in all honesty, though, I'd have to say that the safety of the decade has probably been Brian Dawkins thus far, with Roy soon to pass him.. Reed is great, don't get me wrong, but he has been living off that one great year for quite a while now..

1. Chuck Bednarik, 1949, Philadelphia Eagles (Pennsylvania)...I can't disagree with this. QB is a sexy pick but this guy is what football was about.

2. Lawrence Taylor, 1981, New York Giants (North Carolina)...
Ab-so-freaking-lutely. Love him, or hate him, this guy was a fantastic player.

3. Barry Sanders, 1989, Detroit Lions (Oklahoma State)...
No way! Dick Butkus in 1965 or Anthony Munoz in 1980. My pick would be Munoz.

4. Walter Payton, 1975, Chicago Bears (Jackson State)...Sweetness deserves this, but I will admit, John Hannah in 1973 is right there and so is Reggie White in 1984.

5. Mike Haynes, 1976, New England Patriots (Arizona State)...Don't agree. Deion Sanders in 1989 is the best CB to ever play the game. Certainly better than Haynes. Mike Ditka is a better candidate than Haynes as well.

6. (tie) Sammy Baugh, 1937, Washington Commanders (Texas Christian)
Jim Brown, 1957, Cleveland Browns (Syracuse)...
No offense to Sammy Baugh, but this is Jim Brown's by himself.

7. Clyde "Bulldog" Turner, Chicago Bears, 1940 (Hardin-Simmons)...The homer in me wants to say Chuck Howley in 1958.

8. Ronnie Lott, San Francisco 49ers, 1981 (USC)...
Is there any doubt?

9. Bruce Matthews, Houston Oilers, 1983 (USC)...Hard to argue with this.

10. Marcus Allen, Oakland Raiders, 1982 (USC)...
Rod Woodson could get some attention here too.

11. Doug Atkins, Cleveland Browns, 1953 (Tennessee)...Frank Gifford in 1952 might be as worthy.

12. Herb Adderly, Green Bay Packers, 1961 (Michigan State)...probably right. Namath is about the only argument. Adderly played for the Cowboys for a while.

13. Bob Lilly, Dallas Cowboys, 1961 (Texas Christian)...
I wouldn't dare argue this and couldn't anyway.

14. Gino Marchetti, New York Yanks, 1952 (University of San Francisco)...Again, hard to argue.

15. Jim Taylor, Green Bay Packers, 1958 (LSU)...
So under rated it's a shame. Alan Page in 1967 isn't a bad choice either.

16. Jerry Rice, San Francisco 49ers, 1985 (Mississippi Valley State)...
Best football player ever, yeah I'd say this is the right choice here.

17. Emmitt Smith, Dallas Cowboys, 1990 (Florida)...
You damn betcha.

18. Paul Krause, Washington Commanders, 1964 (Iowa)...
Okay, Not much to compare with.

19. John Mackey, Baltimore Colts, 1963 (Syracuse)...
A great TE and a better man.

20. Forrest Gregg, Green Bay Packers, 1956 (Southern Methodist)...
This man could flat out maul D-linemen. Jack Youngblood in 1971 isn't a bad choice either.

21. Randy Moss, Minnesota Vikings, 1998 (Marshall)...I'd rather have Lynn Swann in 1974.

22. Ernie Stautner, Pittsburgh Steelers, 1950 (Boston College)...
A beast.

23. Ozzie Newsome, Cleveland Browns, 1978 (Alabama)...
Bruce Armstrong in 1987 is compelling. I'd have to go with Ty Law in 1995.

24. Ed Reed, Baltimore Ravens, 2002 (Miami)...
So soon to anoint him, but yeah.

25. Stanley Morgan, New England Patriots, 1977 (Tennessee)...
Slim pickings at this spot.

26. Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens, 1996 (Miami)...
Gotta agree.

27. Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins, 1983 (Pittsburgh)...
No doubt about this one.

28. Darrell Green, Washington Commanders, 1983 (Texas A&I)...One of the great CBs ever. Agree.

29. Fran Tarkenton, Minnesota Vikings, 1961 (Georgia)...
I'm not about to disagree with this one either.

30. Sam Huff, New York Giants, 1956 (West Virginia)...Yet another great footbal player.

31. Tommy McDonald, Philadelphia Eagles, 1957 (Oklahoma)...
Yeah, can't argue this.

32. Bob St. Clair, San Francisco 49ers, 1953 (Tulsa)...Might be Drew Brees someday, but not yet.

The 1998 draft featured four players who looked like can't-miss prospects and one guy who had the talent to match any of them but serious character issues. The four can't-miss prospects were Peyton Manning, Ryan Leaf, Andre Wadsworth and Charles Woodson, which shows that can't-miss prospects often do miss. And the guy with the talent but the character issues was Moss, who slipped all the way down to the 21st pick, where the Vikings jumped on him. And although some of those character issues have become apparent during Moss's career, no one can dispute what an impact he had on the Vikings.
Last I checked, their trophy case looks just like the E-Gals. Empty.

Mackey was and still is the best TE ever. He could easily play today and still be a man among boys. I wonder what he would have done with year round training.

BTW, don't you have anything better to do???? :p:

Ironically #16 on the list could have been tied with Emmitt for #17......

I didn't know that until I saw the best draft trades of all-time on the NFL Network....I didn't know how close Rice came to being a Cowboy.....The Niners had to jump ahead of us to 16 and draft Rice...or Landry would have taken him at 17.....

Just think, instead of Rice and Taylor in SF.....it could have been Rice and Irvin and Emmitt and Novacek and Moose in Dallas......no offense to Harper, but he isn't Jerry Rice....

BTW.........I am sure there has to be a better #21 than Randy Moss

Dallas getting Jerry Rice may have prevented the need or opportunity to draft Irvin or Emmitt.
