It is clear Romo still wants to play, people as good as he is who want to play don't stick around to be back ups to people they more than likely believe are not as good of a player as they are.

I also think sitting out there season is probably a good thing for his body, which means he is going to feel good physically.

Jerry Jones is very loyal to players like Romo, I seriously doubt he would even ask him to sit around on the bench next season.

Put those things together, along with the salary CAP and Romo is going to move on.

If Romo thinks he can still play, then he will want to go somewhere he can play, not warm the bench for Dak. That means either a trade (if one can be arranged), or cutting him loose.

If he doesn't think he can play, then he will retire.

Romo is also not giving away money if he stays in the NFL, and Dallas won't pay him full price to be a backup. The "be a cheap backup for Dak" scenario isn't realistic IMO.

I think you're right about that, but there is, of course, the option of just paying him his salary as is. Dak's on a rookie contract, so it would be essentially your starting QB playing for backup wages and your backup playing for starter wages. I don't think that's the most likely scenario, but it is possible.

I thought this was more of a possibility before Tony's statement. He made it pretty clear that he wants to play still, and to play for a competitor.

looking around the league, his best chance at joining a contender is with denver, but they'd have to be willing to tell paxton lynch to sit in the corner and watch for a year or two. (they did this to brock osweiler, so, who knows?) after that, it's arizona, but they're a big downgrade from dallas. any other starting opportunity would be for a team that downright stinks. if you're an older quarterback with a long list of injuries, that's a terrible idea.

personally, i'd love to see him join espn and be set up opposite stephen a. smith on first take. that would be like divine intervention.

Lots of people here assume Romo will be traded or cut, and granted that is a possibility. But we definitely need Romo for depth. Having Romo on the team means unprecedented team depth.

If someone offers high draft pick compensation for Romo, and by high draft pick compensation I mean a first round pick or more, then Romo is probably gone (assuming he is willing to play for another team). If someone offers us a second round pick, I think it is a gray area. Less than that, Romo isn't going anywhere.

In this hypothetical, lets assume Romo wants to stay. Romo could take a salary reduction (I'm not talking about normal backup pay) let's say to10 million per year for the final years remaining on his contract. He stays on a winning team, his team. He stays at home in his own bed with his lovely wife and their kids.

He saves wear and tear on his body. He gets started with his coach in training status. You know Jerry would love to have him stick around and coach for us. Jerry could eventually make up whatever he loses in salary when he takes over coaching, with a simple handshake.

This makes way too much sense. Everything is in line for it to happen. Jerry would be a fool not to do this.

The only way Romo leaves is if he insists on leaving, which really isn't the best move for him. but it is for his ego. Romo is working on a legacy, but being able to walk and enjoy your kids might be worth more in the big picture. Time will tell.

Honestly I think Cowboys will give Romo a lot of say in this. It is no secret he still wants to play and that is not going to happen in Dallas. I think he feels he has a few seasons left in him and I don't see him wanting to remain in Dallas backing up. Yes it would be great for Dallas to have a QB of this caliber backing up Dak but realistically I think Romo will want to go somewhere that he can finish his career as a starter. I think Jerry relationship with Romo will do what he can to accommodate those wishes.

For Romo, I don't think it is just about the money.

I agree. It's totally my opinion but I think it's safe to say that Romo has saved and invested his money wisely. He and his family are already set for life. I doubt money is any issue whatsoever. Certainly, Romo and his agent will negotiable any future contract with another team carefully to get the most value possible from it but I highly doubt he will play hardball with a team wanting his services. Quite simply, he doesn't have to.

Romo won't be back for several reasons. He's making too much money to be a backup and he can still play (we assume) and is not going to want to waste what little is left of his career carrying a clipboard. He's going to want to play and teams will be interested once he's released. We have to go into next season set at QB with no controversy so Romo will be playing for another team or he may decide to retire. I'm sure he still wants to play and win a championship so remaining as the backup is out of the question. He didn't lose his job on the field and several teams will be interested in him but not likely for a draft pick, at least not a premium pick.
