AMD will give you more bang for your buck if you're on a budget (see Amd Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition).

If money is no object, a top-end Intel is better.

Probably Intel, but don't let that turn you away from AMD. (I have an AMD Phenom II 6X 1100T CPU and it handles anything and all I throw at it including high end games)

Really it comes down to specific processors and their price to performance.

If you don't do anything extremely processor intensive, then it doesn't matter. You can probably go with AMD and get a great bang for your buck.

If you play a lot of high end games, you can get specific Intel processors that slightly edge out AMD processors for about the same price point.

If you are building the PC yourself, then that is a good direction to go. If not, I really wouldn't worry about AMD vs Intel, rather look at the processor that each PC comes with.

I am getting a new laptop and looked at the HP series and they have either the i5 or i7 intel processor. They have the AMD as well but I don't do a lot of gaming at all. What would be the equivalent AMD to the HP?

If you're going with a laptop, you should worry more about ease of use and things such as screen size first. Laptops in a comparable price range will not differ vastly in terms of performance. Accessibility and user comfort are much more important. Figure out your preferences on peripherals and what you want out of the extras, and the processor will typically fall in line as well.

All we buy here at the state are the Intel i7 procs w/ desktops and laptops.

Smidge cheaper and just as good are the AMD's though, i think.

Sometimes AMDs run a bit warmer than Intel. Something to definitively think about when purchasing a laptop.

Which of these are the better processor?

Right now Intel is kickign AMD's arse all over the map and this is from a guy who has bought AMD for my last 5 computers. With my last upgrade I was on a tight budget this year I went with an I5 ove rthe higher end amd because the I5 was outpreforming the Newer AMD.

Hands down at this point go with Intel

Couldn't agree more. Weight, screen size and brightness etc along with such things as HDMI and other ports are what you need to look at esp battery size and run time.

AMD is like a Volkswagon. Intel is like Mercedes.

AMD's equivalent to the i7 is the Phenom II I believe but it really isn't that equivalent. Nothing AMD will compete with an i7 except in cost.

Also, I would recommend not getting an HP but that's just me. I had issues with my previous one, my parents had issues with theirs, and my friend had the same issue as my parents.

Both of their screens completely stopped working. My HP just eventually started making loud noises and now I think it is fried crispy. It wont even turn on.

I would recommend getting a Macbook Pro but that's just me. I have a 13", it is very portable and has an 2.7 GHz i7 in it with 4g of RAM. The brand new line of Macbook Pro's were just released, they have retina display screens, 8g RAM, and solid state drives in them. It is truly an incredible laptop and probably the best on the market unless you are trying to game.

What you're hearing in this thread is not consistent.

The fact is this: Pure power, Intel is probably your deal. If you want bang for the buck, as a whole AMD is your what you want. Now, that said, Intel understands this and wants to compete with AMD on the bang for the buck so they release a CPU that competes and is usually a tad bit better for the same price.

I have the AMD Phenom II 6x 1100T. Intel sells the Intel Core i5-2500K. The Intel is a better high performance CPU than the AMD named and runs about the same price. Though once you start to leave that bracket (those CPUs) the bang for the buck swings in AMD's favor.

If you want the Intel in this place, you're probably building your own PC. Otherwise, that bang for the buck isn't there. (unless the proprietary builder, evens the price out)

You don't play high end games and want a laptop. Go Intel CPU and a MINIMUM of 4GB of memory (preferably more) with Windows 7 64bit. (if going Windows which it sounds like you are) The computational output won't much matter, but heat will for the laptop.

Then, tell everyone else to shut the **** up. ;) :D

btw, AMD is no Volkswagon, and Intel damn sure isn't a Mercedes.

AMD is better than a Volkwagon and Intel isn't anywhere near a Mercedes. (even with their fades quality of late) Yes Intel overall is better than AMD, but don't let jaded eyes fool you. You will pay for Intel unless you are smart and build your own PC. Otherwise, people are talking out of their *** in quality for what you get for the price. That is what really matters.

this is the best post bar none

i have done amd for yeras since i realized how people are sucked into buying intel because intel gives them more when they couldnt use it because people thought the processor was the speed of the comp, its the memory. amd makes a better all around chip, intel concentrates on one thing, if ur not goig high end, amd is a better chip. tho i havent considered recent recent comparsions lately, but ive had amd for years and ive tried everything on the chips and they keep going.

Thanks for all the input. My concerns are the speed f the processor for running business software and general web browsing and streaming some video. I also am concerned about the heating up of the unit. The one I have now gets VERY hot and it is an AMD.

Man, I hate HP laptops with passion, so many junk programs are preloaded and the laptops that I've had gotten very hot during operation, had motherboards separated within 6 months of purchase, and runs slower than it's competition. Do they even run environmental stress test to figure out the reliability factors? Apparently not because failure rate of HP laptop components are very high.

Before purchasing a unit, check reviews for heat. Just because I said AMDs tend to run warmer, that doesn't mean you can't get a cool AMD laptop or an extremely hot Intel laptop. My wife had a laptop with an Intel processor that would scorch you lap!

As I said, check reviews before you buy!

I have the same MacBook Pro. Core i7 (Sandy Bridge), HD3000 integrated GPU, with some minor upgrades I performed on my own.

The quality is great but it does have one big design flaw which allows the processor to overheat. By overheat, I mean the processor can get to 80c with anti-virus running or 60c-70c while watching youtube videos.

You should definitely go in-store to see what each computer manufacturer has to offer.
