An example of poor playcalling

Our first possession on third down we line up in a 3 receiver set with Witten and Bennett at tight end. There was two recievers to the left and one reciever right. Here are the routes

REMEMBER IT WAS 3RD AND 5

1. Crayton was in the left slot and ran a 3 yard out.
2. Austin wide left just ran a clear out at half speed
3. Williams wide right ran a go route clear out
4. Bennett ran a 3 yard out
5. Witten ran a stop in the middle at 3 yards (I'll get back to this)

Last 3 plays of the game.

The first play where Crayton caught an 5 yard pass.

3 receivers and Witten.

1. Crayton ran an in to an out at 4 yards
2. Hurd right next to him ran a post.
3. On the other side Austin ran a post
4. Witten ran a 3 yard out from the slot.

Last 2 plays

1. Crayton runs a 3 yard out from the slot
2. The other two receivers run a short post.

The last play was all three recievers ran short posts.

For starters, on 3rd and 5 we have everyone running 3 yard patterns besides the clear out guys. If it wasn't for a hold we would of had to kick.

Next, do you notice we run 3 yard outs on every play from the slot? Also, short posts are very popular in our offense.

Last, no wonder why were not scoring points those routes that are called are difficult to be successful in.

Look at Indy, Philly, and the better offense's, they always have someone crossing the middle. When Indy played Arizona a couple weeks ago on Sunday Night Football remember when Garcon ran the LONG post and Wayne ran all the way across the field and when Garcon cleared he went right into the open void for a td.

Look at Philly, they are always finding ways to get Desean Jackson open deep. It's all about play design. If we are running 3 yard patterns how can we go deep?

What Im trying to say is we got to run routes down the field and criss cross the crap out of the defenses. We never have a player who runs a cross over the middle. That should be a start. Miles Austin should be that guy. Look at Wes Welker he makes a living doing that kind of stuff. It seems as if Garrett keeps the middle open for Witten all the time. I really think this is a big part of our problem. With our running game being so good we shouldn't have a problem getting it down the field through play action. The only problem is we have short routes being called.

There's nothing wrong with running routes shorter than the first down marker.

Example quote from a coach (quickest find):

You hear the sportscaster comment that the receiver did not run the distance he needed to make a first down. You have to school your team on the fact that half of the yardage you make forward passing is after the catch. If we have 3rd down and 15 yards to go, it does not mean we are going to run a 15 yard pass pattern. We will generally throw the ball 10 and get up into the 20's. We remind our team, it is 2nd and 20, 3rd and 25, we are going to run a basic pattern, get all we can out of the completion and run for the rest of it. We are constantly reminding our receivers what their stats are running after the catch. Dwight Clark might be 4.2; Fred Soloman might be 9.3. This is one way you measure a receivers performance and his contribution to the ball club. 3rd down and 8 does not mean you have to throw an 8 yard pass.
Based on the names of the players cited, you'll realize it was Bill Walsh.

I hear you but we don't run that offense nor do we have the personnel to do it. It's all about design and there's none to this offense. We run the same patterns on every play almost. Once in a while we need to run

1. Williams on a 20 yard post from the right
2. Witten a 15 yard post from the right TE position
3. Austin an 11 yard cross from the left wide out

Romo pumps Witten and Williams and hits Austin in the void. Were still running our posts but we add a new wrinkle to it.

This is a new one most of the time Garrett is blasted because people accuse him of running all these 15 and 20 yard routes. You guys need to get together and get your story straight which is it? Is he running all these short dink and dunk routs or is he running all these deep routes? :laugh1:

I actually thought that the first drive that we scored on was one of the best playcalling series we have had all year.

I thought it was superb.

The dumb thing is that most of these routes are based on pre snap reads. The quarterback and receiver are supposed to read the same thing. This is a timing offense and that is based on what kind of defense they are in and how the defnder plays the route. Depending on what the defender does tells the receiver where to go. That is why you see the ball thrown one place and the receiver in another a lot of times. They are not on the same page.

I wonder how much bearing Romo's height has to do with some of the routes/play design? He isn't the tallest quarterback out there so he has to have passing lanes to really see the field.I guess what i'm getting at is that he has to have a lane to throw through rather than throw over the line(shorter routes). On deeper routes the trajectory of the ball is high enough so no worries, but on shorter routes that is another story.Maybe that is part of the reason for so much shotgun,it allows him to see the field better and make an easier throw over the line.Has anybody watched alot of Drew Brees play in New Orleans, just curious as to how they overcomes his lack of ideal height.

Not defending Garrett here but short routes were called due to the pressure Denver was getting but I completely agree on the middle part. We need more plays over the middle, just not so deep all the time. We tried to many deep passes last year and that got Romo knocked out of the game due to o-line injuries. Romo took a pounding in the Panthers game also...
