I saw this stat on NFL Network tonight.

Since 2006, the Patriots have had 51 draft picks. 23 of those picks are currently on their roster. A success rate of 45%.

So I got to thinking, what about us?

Well, since 2006, the Cowboys have had 41 draft picks....

22 of those picks are currently on our roster.

A success rate of 54%.

None of it matters if you're not winning.

I think I also heard that only 6 of their last 46 picks are starters.

Exactly. Carolina had the most starters last year from the last few drafts. Where are they drafting this year?

Be careful making sense around here. I guess you did not get the memo...winning is trumped by "Hard Knocks", multiple training camp sites, biggest video boards, hosting sell out concerts, hosting boxing events, having 13 pro bowlers, counting byes during the playoffs as playoff wins, having a top 3 pass rusher, having a future HOF TE, having the best backup QB in the NFL, being on TV all the time, getting the #1 FOX crew to announce our games etc....So take comfort in the fact that although we may not win, we do have that going for us.

And to be candid, I don't DISLIKE those things, but winning is what this should ultimately be about...and if I feel ENTERTAINED during the process, great...but no amount of entertainment exceeds the satisfaction of winning!

This is too funny
The usual suspects with the usual excuses

What is the Pats post season record compared to our post-season record over that time?

I am not looking for "success" that translates into losing.
Perhaps you are.

Thread starter talks about draft success.

You bring up something completely different.

BINGO!!! The only stats that really matter are the ones they (being the Pats)rack up in January and February..

They had 4 Pro bowlers, what I found more interesting is the Jets only had 27 picks (instead of 50+ like the Pats) and they also had produced 4 pro bowlers.

I think the biggest difference here is drafting strategy. In many cases Jerry is like Al Davis. Just loves to take chances on super athletic guys, the difference between Jerry and Al is Al will do it with the first round pick and Jerry does it with 3rd and 4th round picks. For me, I will take a athletic good player over a super athletic idiot.

I believe the Packers (starting) offense is 100% drafted and their defense is high too.

Not sure what it all means, ultimately, however, I would think having a higher percentage of drafted guys would typically means a lower salaries vs a high percentage of free agents on the roster.

Yo Chocolate Lab where is that picture I made you?

These stats are ill-conceived.

Let's say the Cowboys draft incredibly well from 2011-2014. I'm talking like just superb drafts for 4 drafts in a row and picking up key positions like QB, cornerback, etc. And also let's say the Cowboys hit on every key free agent pickup.

By 2015 comes up, it's going to be really hard to find draft picks who can make the team. The picks from 2011-2014 will be hitting their primes. We'll still have guys that could be still valuable like Felix, Miles Austin, Dez, etc...all guys that were on the team before 2011.

That doesn't mean that the 2015 and beyond drafts would be bad if they can't find the team. It's just that the team is really, really good.

We see this every year...some team that sucks will have a bunch of rookies that get to play because their team sucks. Then everybody will be talking about how good their draft class looked. But because the team sucked, those rookies got a chance to play. And 4 years from then the rookies are either out of the league or more or less marginal players.

What happened to the Patriots is the same thing...they stockpiled talent and then their drafts suffered in part because they had so much talent and couldn't get those draft picks on their roster. I also think they started to look for great special teams players in early rounds instead of better players and that hurts them as well.

no i dont

the OP is just trying to make excuses, i am just pointing out (as have others) that that is excatly what these are, excuses

when you win, you dont have to make excuses, you do have to make excuses when you lose

draft "success" does not have mean having more players you drafted on your team (as the OP is saying)

draft success means having drafted players contribute significantly to a winning franchise

if a team is not that good, more of the drafted players may find a place on that team as opposed to a team with a lot of good players with good depth.

i guess it is a difference in how we define "success"

It appears to me all the OP was doing was pointing out an interesting fact. He didn't offer any conclusions that he drew, or make any excuses for anything based on the information, he merely stated facts. You appear to have read a lot more into his post than he actually said.

This. Thanks Staut.

Considering the fact that we are one of the most talented teams in the NFL, I think that 54% rate is pretty telling. I know it hasn't translated to wins, but this is a very talented roster.
