I read this article a couple of weeks ago and meant to post it, but here it is now. It's about the Jags quick turnaround and change in coaching and front office philosophy.

"The biggest change from the past several seasons has been the culture --..... That sounds like a no-brainer, but the previous regime under coach Gus Bradley was all about the process: If players work to become their best and everyone is at their best at the same time then victories will come. That made no sense to Coughlin or Marrone. Discipline and accountability was the first priority.

Coughlin and Marrone also put together a physically and mentally exhausting training camp designed to push and test the players' commitment, drive and ability to withstand adversity. The days were long, beginning with early-morning meetings, and the practices were longer than they have been ..........How can we win as much as possible and as consistently as possible? If we are doing anything that is not helping us win, then why are we doing it?"

Good stuff. The Eagles took a very similar trek when Pederson took over. Cowboys have a lot of good buzz words and catch phrases, though.

That's not possible under the existing CBA. This isn't the 70's or 80's when they had 2-a-days any more.

You don't need 2- a -days to demand better from your players during training camp. Zeke looked downright pudgy coming out of camp, Gooodels discipline motivated him more than his coach could and came back looking much better after his suspension.

It was funny when people came to zekes defense claiming he wasnt out of shape. They mustve been blind

Yes it is. There is still some flexibility within the new CBA rules. Yes, you can't run 2-a-days anymore but you can do other things.

There is nothing in the CBA that prevents them from having early morning meetings, etc.

We have a soft franchise with a laid back culture.

Discipline and accountability...

Two things missing from Jerry and Garrett's team.

That's not entirely true. If you don't wear a suit on road trips Garrett will cut you in a heartbeat. OR, if there is a mistaken identity on a police report, "Garrett will make a decision that is in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys".

If you wear a suit or actually get arrested/suspended, you're safe.

I used to take my kids to training camp when it was here in San Antonio. I'm not joking when I say this, it appeared that I exerted more energy walking up and down the Alamodome steps to and from the parking lot than the players were exerting on the field. Every time I went it looked like the team was jogging through the motions.

Very different atmosphere than when the Oilers used to practice here, in the heat going full speed.

I went to a bunch of those TCs in SA also and you're right about the practices. There were some moments where they were pushing it, but it mostly looked like just jogging through the motions.

Yep, for Garrett it's all about the "process". Obviously it will become a "process" for any coaching staff. After all "process" is just the steps taken to achieve a goal. The goal is the same for 32 teams. Did Coughlin and Marrone change up the "process" or team culture? Team culture is not "process". A culture is the expression of a team's values, attitudes, and beliefs about sports and competition. It determines whether, for example, the team's focus is on fun, mastery, or winning or whether it promotes individual accomplishment or team success.

IMO the culture of the Cowboys promotes individual over team. Dez is a perfect example. Romo was too. The culture is complacency, status quo: don't draft a QB because the one we have is going to be here for 5 more years; allow your #1WR to run lazy routes and throw his hands up in frustration when the ball doesn't come to him. JJ has always placed high value on the individual. The Patriots are the opposite of that. Malcolm Butler didn't play a single defensive snap for a reason.

They seem to believe that if the coach is friendly, likeable and treats them well, it will produce results.

You can still be a likeable coach (Pederson is) but also be a very disciplined team. We clearly are not that.

we're not winning a superbowl with garrett as our coach. we're not competing in a super bowl with garrett as our coach. thats all

Who cares about playing in that game? #1 in revenue is where its at!!!!!!!

I cringe when I hear about Zeke or Dak or whoever selling however many jerseys. couldn't care less

We don't have to care, but a certain greedy old drunken fool smiles about it every time he checks his bank account balance. And then laughs at all the sheep who bought his crap while providing nothing in return.

My take on Garrett is that he would be a discipline and accountability coach, but Jerry's in the way. For discipline and accountability to work, there has to be consequences. I guarantee Jerry would be right in the middle of it if Garrett was to bench someone like, say Dez. Replacing JG isn't going to change the culture, at least not beyond temporarily. Remember, when JG took over for Wade, he was more of a disciplinarian. And before that, Parcells. But after awhile, the perfume wears off the hog and Jerry is back inserting himself to much. I thought it very telling when, at the end of the year, Dez said he wanted to sit down with the coaches and JJ. And Deion used to bypass the coaches and go straight to JJ. That's not a successful way to operate.

Culture doesn't change when the owner immerses himself in the day to day operations of managing the football team. Hire any coach you want, the culture isn't going to change.

10-20 more years of the garrett process will reap benefits. we will be a dynasty... lmao..
