Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson signed a four-year, $39 million contract a year ago but that doesn't keep him from returning to his family farm in tiny Riley, Kansas every off-season and putting in a full day's work.

In an interview in the new issue of ESPN the Magazine, Nelson explained that he will work up to 12 hours per day on the farm, driving a combine to cut wheat or rounding up the 1,000-cow herd in the town with a population of 992.

“Working cattle is my favorite farm duty,” Riley told ESPN. “I probably identify more as a farmer [than a football player].”

Nelson went on to explain that in Riley, he is “just the farm kid they have always known.”

After starring as a quarterback at Riley High School, Nelson walked on at nearby Kansas State where he ultimately moved to wide receiver. Since being drafted in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Nelson has caught 49 touchdowns and was a Pro Bowler in 2014.

In an interview with The 700 Club earlier this year, Nelson explained how life on the farm prepared him for the NFL.

I'd imagine it's a lot easier to enjoy working when you know that, for one thing, you don't have to and, for another, there's an end in sight.

I'm not big on taking a lot away from professional players or celebs but after reading this, I think there is a message here for me personally. There is always something you can do to help and sometimes I don't always do that.

Good on Jordy Nelson.

Urshel said he lives on 25k a year and Broyles said he budgets 60k. I know one of the Cowboys pretty well and he never even sees bonus or endorsement money. He lives off of his game checks and the rest gets invested.

There are some smart NFL players. Just seem few and far between though.

Jordy is good people.

Those of us who have followed Nelson since his early K-St days have nothing but good things to say about him. It really made me sick when GB drafted him. I got the same feeling when SEA drafted Tyler Lockett this year.

Agreed...but not only that, in this current media landscape it's a much juicier story to cover a guy who blew millions in spectacular fashion, than a guy who balanced his checkbook and intelligently managed his expenses/investments.

The smart ones are out there, quietly managing their fortunes, and not getting the attention.
