Forgive my rambling, but let me just roll it out there and see if anyone feels this way besides me.

What I like about Garrett:

*Our guy - not a retread
*Young guy - potential to be a long term solution
*From all reports highly organized
*Smart guy
*Good communicator
*Football blood line - both as a player, and family of coaches etc.
*Done a great job as an offensive coordinator - I know there are haters and my response is who cares what you think... look at the numbers.
*Has done a good job as interim... inherited a 1-7 team and a backup QB.

What I have not liked about Garrett:

*I want to see more control on the sidelines. Does Jason EVER get on to someone in the course of a game? (Barber needed to be disciplined immediately, in my opinion)

*Does Jason EVER question an official or get upset by a bad call (how about the missed face mask in the 1st quarter?)

My gut feel:

1. This team has some major holes that won't be fixed by a coaching change.
2. This team has a fast closing window for the core talent on this team.
3. Jerry Jones has ZERO idea about what to do to fix #1 and #2.
4. If we go big name coach route - we are in this same place a decade from now. (That is my gut feel)

5. If we go Garrett route, at least I HOPE there is some hope long term. He develops, the team develops, and we have a long term future.

I don't know if Jerry Jones has it in him to make a smart long term decision. I think he may go "lets make a splash".

After tonight, I don't know what he'll do.

our biggest problem and my worst nightmare.

No one knows what Jerry will do, that is bottom line. Everyone wants Jerry do this or that, and think he needs to do this or that. Jerry is a great owner and GM he'll get it done

Ill follow your lead if you dont mind.

What i like about Garrett:
• Young offensive mind
• Not a retread
• Positive additude

What i dont like about Garrett:
• Lack of HC experience
• Not defensive minded
• Stubborn

Surely you jest.

"Making a splash" isn't always a bad thing when you're talking about hiring a big-name coach. Parcells was as big a splash as you can get, and that was hardly some disaster.

I know everyone is polarized on this, but I really don't get the several people I've seen who have said things along the lines of being "hopeless" if Jerry doesn't hire Red. Really? What if he's the next Zorn or McDaniels? And why would anyone be hopeless about a Fisher or Gruden?

Great owners/GMs win more then one play off game in a 15 year span. He has yet to prove he is even an average GM since he took over for Jimmy.

It's "hopeless" because Garrett is the Red Savior sent down from the football gods to adorn the Cowboys with big winning once again.

I understand your position Lab, and you and I already interacted on Fisher in another thread.

That is what I mean by in the same place in a decade. Jeff Fisher has more .500 and sub .500 seasons as a coach than he does winning ones. Gruden took a Tampa Bay team that was already built and just took it to another level. Then they went downhill.

Parcells was a good hire, but he was on his last leg when we hired him.

Jason has great POTENTIAL.

I would like a proven Coach , who has proved already that he can win.

The bottom line is that WHOEVER is hired is NOT a long term guy.

Like I said in another thread, I am slowly beginning to believe that coaches are really only good to about 4-5 years...ESPECIALLY in Dallas. The players here know they can go the the owner, so they KNOW that the coach is not the end of the chain of command.

This is a trend that is being seen across the NFL with only a few exceptions and those depnd on how they are run.

If JG gets the gig, 4-5 years is all he gets.....same thing with any other coach.

Potential....the "P" word that his killed countless coaches. Henson had "Potential" as did Hutchinson.

I always crack up when I hear the "P" word being bantied about.

Parcells wasnt really hired IMO to be a "splash". He was hired because a downtrodden Jerry had learned a very hard lesson, that it was way past time for him to make some serious changes in how the franchise was run. And he hired Parcells, and turned over the decision making to him (regardless of what he says publicly)

While some crucify him for hiring Wade, I have said numerous times I understand WHY he hired Wade. It just didnt work out. (so in the myopic opinions of some, that makes it a "bad" decision) But his judgement was sound in WHY he hired him, and he did go through a very lengthy search before naming Wade HC. It was nothing like the "searches" which yieleded those 3 knuckleheads of Switzer, Gailey and Campo.

That said, I do think if he fails to name Garrett HC he, as well as alot of Cowboy fans will be regretting it down the road.

Jason Garrett is doing nothing more than WADE did,,,,,,Pandering to the Players.....he has not taken control of this team to make it his,,,,just merely mending fences tell the end of the season.....

Pandering to players is not Coaching..

The only other thing I'd add about Garrett is this,

Garrett had either 2 or 3 HC opportunities a couple years ago (rumor is that the STL Rams were also interested).

One of those teams were the Ravens. The Ravens, imo, are a fairly well run organization.

It's not ONLY JJ who sees something in Garrett. Other organizations, including ones better run than the current Cowboys, see him as HC material.

That doesn't mean that Garrett is a sure thing, of course. But, it does mean that JJ isn't alone on a limb on this one.

For god sakes stop with this ridiculous arguement. For the final time Wade was a bad hire period. I'll say it again, most guys dont get three shots as a head coach in the NFL for a reason. Then Jerry compounded this mistake by keeping him on after the debacle in Philly in 08. I'll also say the fact that Jerry wants to hire Garrett is reason enough for me alone to doubt the guy.

That is a good point Woods. I am rooting for JG to get the job as long as Jerry lets him replace as many of the defensive coaches as he wants.

I agree he shoulod have canned him after the Baltimore and Philly losses in 2008.

But I still understand why he hired him to begin with, and it wasnt a decision that was totally without logic.

The irony is the reason he hired Wade was to get an inconsistent, underachieving defense to become very good, if not great. And 4yrs later, we will still have to fix the defense.
