An Observation of RGIII... Play by Play - Post 35

I usually don't post much -- there's enough to read on this fine forum without ever having to post new material.

But after having an opportunity to have watched the Redksins 1st pre-season game, I came away thinking that RGIII was not very impressive.

I know it's all still new for him and I'm sure he'll get better, but when I first saw him out there I immediately thought of Cordell Stewart.

And when he finally threw a couple of passes, I immediately thought of Quincy Carter.

He did not have much 'gusto' on his passes -- and the touchdown he threw was a 1 yard 'jump pass' dump-off to his receiver which 'earned' his way into the endzone.

I have seen several guys on TV proclaiming that Tony Romo might be the worst quarterback in this division -- I beg to differ.

I don't know where Tony comes in at but he is head and shoulders above RGIII (at this point anyway).

The Commanders ran the ball on multiple consecutive plays -- almost to a point where I was thinking, 'Are they hiding something here...?'

Even the broadcasters for the game were 'intrigued' by the mass number of running plays by the Commanders -- at one point I counted 7 consecutive running plays.

The first pass that I recall seeing him throw was ugly -- true -- it could have been nerves -- but it was definitely looking for a body of water to settle down on.

Now, it's true, they did not let him run with the ball -- and I'm thinking that this is the area where he will truly shine -- but as far as being worried about his potential as a pocket-passer (at this point anyway) -- I saw little to concern myself.

I didn't post this thread to bash RGIII -- Maybe just knock him down a bit.

I'm just not sure how/when it will translate into a productive pro QB.

You watch Baylor games and it seemed their passing game was made up entirely of short passes.

yeah I seen alot of screen to kendall Wright. But i think the skins will run alot of screens also sooo idk.

but i think tony romo is the 2nd best QB in the division only because Eli has 2 superbowl rings and superbowl mvp's.

but romo numbers up to the rest of the Qb's and just laugh in anybody face who says romo is the worst QB in the division. Maybe when he was drafted yea (vick, eli, and RG3 where top picks in the draft and tony romo was undrafted).


It will be interesting to see him play tonight vs the bears but than again we can really tell once the regular season starts.

Baylor ran alot of short and long passes. They did not have a lot of intermediate routes or complicated route trees. His speed puts immense pressure on safeties and linebackers in coverage. With 2 or 3 designed runs per game, he can really get the safties to bit on the run action.

Is he known to throw short 'jump' passes? -- Almost gave me the impression that he felt that he had to get above the linemen in front of him.

I don't watch much college football so I never saw him play but he definitely looks a little 'quirky' back there.

I guess NFL defensive linemen have a distinct way of making a QB look a little 'quirky'.....

I really liked RG3 in college. My big issue with him, is I think he may have a little
"Vick" in him. Not in the way that you may think. My only real question with him will be if he can stay healthy. I watched him play quite a bit, and it seems like he has the tendency to take a hit and not be the same player the rest of the game. I don't think he is a really tough guy. He has a ton of talent, and is a good guy. I just don't think he is tough. We will see.

Griffin3 isn't Andrew luck or (even?) Tony Romo, but I think his skill set is perfect for Shanahan's offensive system.

Agree, Muhast. I don't think he likes getting hit a lot, though in Goodell's NFL that's becoming less of a concern. But also he simply isn't very big. If I were a Skins fan I'd be worried about him getting hurt.

Are you sure our username shouldn't read VARedskin? Because I would think any Cowboys knows by now that Romo has a very quick release, drawing comparisons to Dan Marino's.

I think RG III will take time to develop. I didn't follow him closely in College, but his passing skills developed a lot by the time he left college vs when he started. Because he was never considered a high pick let alone top 5 pick till his final season in College.

He is accurate though, especially long throws. But he is not going to be Andrew Luck, ie. ready made starter for NFL. But with Shanahan tailoring the offense around him, he might have pretty good success initially till he gets the NFL game.

I think he's overrated and I thought that long before the Commanders made the trade to get him.

If anybody watched Luck play vs the Rams and RG3 play vs the Bills you could clearly see that Luck is more NFL ready than RG3.

Luck's completion to Collie for the TD was all him by looking off the deep safety in a cover 2 shell. By Luck looking to the left the right half deep safety started to clamp down on the inside of the route and Collie then broke outside for the post (he ran a corner route) and that look off was just enough to get Collie open in the window and Luck threw a perfect strike to him.

Rookie's don't come in a do that in their first preseason game much less see cover 2 defenses and are able to read them correctly. Watching that drive was a thing of beauty.

Screw the Skins, but this RG3 kid ain't bad, no matter how much we want him to be. He needs work, especially with his drops (he can't be in a shotgun all the time), but for anyone to look at him and state he sucks, let's me know who doesn't have a clue about the position.
