This is George Halas. 324 career wins.

This is Vince Lombardi. Championships are named after him.

Neither of them were ever known as "The Man in the Hat" even though both wore them regularly, and Halas did it long before Tom Landry ever walked a sideline. Halas had more victories. Lombardi more Championships. Yet Tom Landry is the person associated with that phrase more than any other person. The reason for it is the class he exuded as much as anything else. He was a man of character and high moral fiber. Now and then I think it is good that we get reminded of how blessed we as fans were to have had a man like this to look up to.

Anyway, just an observation.

I guess because it was fairly common to wear hats back then. Same with Paul Brown. However as time went on Landry was the only one in the 70's and 80's still wearing the fedora

that makes sense

I always thought that making that deal that the coaches had to wear whatever instead of suits like they always did before was a steaming pile of HS.

Head Coaches in suits looked classy. Especially if they were not particularly fit.

Now a lot of them look just plain stupid

NFL wants them wearing the NFL gear and what the coaches are wearing fans can buy at the store. Like you I would rather see coaches dress the way they want. Bum Phillips wearing Jeans and his cowboy boots and Cowboy hat was a sight to see. But that is who he was :laugh2:

How was Mike Nolan able to wear a suit as the 49ers coach a fews years back? Did he get fined and just pay them?

In a rare show of common sense from a league known for disciplining players who wear the wrong socks, the NFL will allow 49ers coach Mike Nolan to wear a suit on the sidelines at all eight home games this year.

"We've agreed to coach Nolan's request," said Brian McCarthy, the NFL's director of corporate communications. "He told us he was looking (to wear the suit) for the eight home games."

Since becoming a head coach, Nolan has said he wants to wear a suit to honor his father, Dick Nolan, who wore a suit on the sidelines as the 49ers' head coach from 1968 to 1975. But the NFL has refused, as corporate sponsor Reebok wants coaches wearing Reebok-made sweatshirts, windbreakers or other NFL apparel. A group of fans had been planning to wear suits to support Nolan.

You forgot the greatest HC in NFL history. Paul Brown also wore a hat:

Edit: I see Doomsday also mentioned Brown.

You have to have some class to make it work.
