This is just my initial thoughts on what money Dallas could create and how to use it.
We have $6.5 million in cap space.
Sign WR Terrelle Pryor $7 million cap hit in 2017 on five-year contract (based on Dez’s contract)
Restructure WR Dez Bryant’s contract, opens up about $9 million or $10 million in cap space.
Sign DE DeMarcus Ware $3 million cap hit in 2017 on two-year contract
Resign CB Morris Claiborne $3 million cap hit in 2017 on two-year contract
Resign S Barry Church $2 million cap hit in 2017 on five-year contract
Resign G Ron Leary $5 million cap hit in 2017 on four-year contract
Cut T Doug Free, opens up $5 million in cap space
Resign RB Darren McFadden $2 million in 2017 on two-year deal
Cut RB Alfred Morris opens up $1.5 million in cap space
Trade or cut Tony Romo, opens up $5 million in cap space
That leaves us with around $5 million to sign our rookies, a backup QB and a few vet minimum free agents. I wouldn't re-sign Martin this year with Romo's contract opening up lots of money to do it next year, along with Collins, who would compete for the starting spot at right tackle ... with Martin being the fallback if Collins and Green fail. However, there are other restructures we could do if we wanted to reup Martin this year.
With the first couple of picks in the draft, I would be completely focused on defense. Adding Ware doesn't alleviate our need for an end, it just improves the quality of our depth.
Understand that the numbers are just first-year cap hit. The second year on the long-term deals would balloon, creating the opportunity for a restructure, moving base salary into bonus if cap space is needed.
