That I can't leave unsaid anymore. From a win a Super Bowl this year perspective, I believe we have mishandled the Romo/Dak situation.
It is my opinion that in the exuberance of our great start, and our amazement at finding our quarterback of the future on the scene so unexpectedly soon, we lost sight of this season's goal - to win the Super Bowl. I believe of the QB's on the roster - Romo is the only one with the NFL experience likely to achieve that goal. I believe that, with that goal in mind, you start playing Romo in the second half of games late in the season to get him to game speed, you let him start the finale, and he starts in the playoffs. Dak remains a proven backup in case of injury, he has seen the Cowboys future in the mirror, and I believe Dak is not the kind to have seen this move as anything but the way of things.
This is not Aikman/Walsh, or Brees/Rivers - Romo knows his time starting here is nearing the end, and Dak knows his time starting here is just getting started. And I don't think this gets into Dak's head one bit.
I've been reluctant to venture into this realm, because it will seem like Romo cheerleading or Dak hating, and while I could be guilty of the former, I will not brook consideration of the latter, which is nonsense. Finding Dak means this team has a decade of good QB'ing in front of them. He's actually restored my interest in this team past the end of the Romo era, something Jones/Goodell/NFL rules committee had put in serious doubt.
I will be happy for Dak to prove me incorrect, that he as a rookie has what it takes to navigate NFL playoff football to a successful conclusion. But there is a reason the Pantheon of Super Bowl winning QB's is an empty one. And I am afraid we will find out why if not today, then next week versus Atlanta. Let us hope Dak's successful run has three more games and my thoughts about needing a steady hand at the wheel around Cape Horn are overwrought. Our future is bright - but we may not be taking the most successful path into it.
