They have it on defense.
- Dan Quinn knows how to coach and motivate players.
- Parsons is the QB of the defense and was already the leader as a rookie.

I think McCarthy is underrated by Cowboys fans.
- His Green Bay teams always appeared well coached.
- His best skill is enabling the assistant coaches.
- Part of the HC's job in Dallas is to deal with Jerry and with the media and let the coaching staff do their jobs.
- Garrett didn't know how to work with his coaching staff. He felt threatened by good assistants.
- Garrett's best assistant was OL coach Bill Callahan. Garrett hated him and Callahan departed for the same job in Washington.

Top 10 defense this season?

I'm very curious about the linebacker positional group...able to be strong against the run?

What we need is our stars to show up in big games, think this is one of the reasons why Amari Cooper is no longer on the roster.
Cooper had wow ability, but it's football 101 that teams can't tolerate dissention in the ranks, especially not to the level of players calling out coaches.
- Zero tolerance policy coaches: Jimmy, Belichick, Saban...

Vander Esch was playing as well as anybody on defense not named Parsons/Diggs at the end of the season.
I'm hoping that he now becomes a stud, in linebacking strength and aggression.

I'm even very curious about the drafted linebackers now. A lot of time on the carpet questions in this group now.

I'm not hoping for Bruce Lee, but right here, I wouldn't mind in next year's draft:

DT Gervon Dexter, Florida

Gervon Dexter is the kind of prospect who could be an elite defender in the middle of their defense. The 6'6" 313-pounder has great length and is explosive off the ball, giving him the ability to not only play well against the run but offer huge upside as a pass-rusher
Dexter was a highly productive tackler for Florida last season, posting 50 stops as a tackle with 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss.

His athleticism up front would be a welcome addition to an elite Dallas defense.

The 1992 Cowboys are a top 10 NFL team of ALL-TIME.
It was led by triplets on offense and a fast, deep defense.

They had plenty of top end physical freaks on the roster in reality just not necessarily in the most obvious ways.
Emmitt for instance is very much a physical marvel. He just wasn't the size/speed type freak but instead a workhorse with unheard of durability and consistency.
But Dallas has so many guys hitting their prime together and maturing into elite players.
Haley had a bad run for scouts and clocked in at 4.8 but in a private workout in SF he ran a 4.55; he was a freak athletically who just didn't have Emmitt's back and thus he suffered much of his later career.

Jimmy had brought Wanny/Butch Davis and the Miami 4-3 to Dallas.
They were the fastest front 7 in football.
And the DL was DEEEEPPPPP!!!
That was the start of rotating DL to give max effort every play.
Dallas finished ranked 1st in defense and then allowed only 16PPG in the playoffs
Kevin Smith was outstanding that year and pre-injury was on target to be an all-time great corner. --still a local guy byw.

This might be the deepest DL in NFL history. Those were all starter caliber guys.
If you were to compare that to ANY team today the difference would be depth and lack of weaknesses.
That team just marched forward behind that OL and wore you down while the defense shut people down.
Agree. Only thing I disagree w/, is who led the O. IMO, it was led by the dominant OL.

That was, IMO, the most talented team in NFL history. Nate Newton and Erik Williams were called the best blocking tandem in NFL history before Erik's wreck. Larry Allen was the best OLineman of all time.

Chockfull of talent, especially on D.

Perspective added:

Player who benefited most from draft: LB Micah Parsons

The Cowboys want to keep the versatility that helped Parsons win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Owner Jerry Jones has referred to Parsons' position as a "Micah player." He can be a linebacker. He can be a pass-rusher. Had the Cowboys not selected Sam Williams in the second round, they would have kept that plan in place, but Williams presents the Cowboys -- and Parsons -- with more options. Williams goes into a pass-rush pool with DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr. Parsons can continue to move between positions with ease, especially with Leighton Vander Esch's return via free agency and Jabril Cox's return from injury. -- Todd Archer

My favorite player in the 2023 draft at this point is Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer.
- Elite route runner with terrific foot quickness and an aggressive blocker.

Nice...Notre Dame also has a defensive end of interest as well.

good points but here are a few pointers :

If McCarthy is the right coach why was he fired ? and spent a year at home . His blunders on the field and the bad losses to good teams only give power to the theory he is washed up and benefited from a HOF QB during his packers days. We have also seen players respond better to Dan . This translates to Dan becoming the coach if the expected mediocre season unfolds. Jerry will call Sean Payton , first. if that fails Dan Quinn gets the job.

You forgot to mention the mediocrity of the QB at dallas. he touches the ball on every snap and has not delivered in crunch games . too many missed throws and he seems flustered. Cannot be compared to Aikman.

The game has changed a lot since 1992.....
What they don't tackle, block, run, catch, pass, punt, and kick anymore in professional football?

Nothing has change but the date on the calendar and the people who actually built the 1992 roster. They were fired or forced to leave after the 1991 season with the final firing of the Head Coach was before the 1994 season.

You're right.

Steve Young led the NFL in TD passes with 25 in 1992. That would have been good for 17th in 2021.
Dan Marino threw for 4,100 yards to lead the NFL, nobody else threw for over 3,500 yards.

Baker Mayfield last year - 26 TDs, 8 INTs, 3,500 yards (BUM) Steve Young in 1992 - 25 TDs, 7 INTS, 3,500 yards (MVP)

13 RBs had over 1,000 yards rushing in 1992. 7 did in 2021.

Nope. Nothing at all has changed.
